Hi all. Stuck at work cause me td5 has given up. On the way in this morning the biting point of my clutch was getting lower and lower. So I thought it was my slave cylinder going as I didn't hav a puddle beneath my foot. As I pulled up I couldn't disengage the clutch so phoned RAC and they turned up. When he started the engine a horrible squeal came from the landy that I have never heard before. Therefore he thinks it was my clutch going. But is it? Any ideas?

What's making you say that. I had a similar problem with my last defender. Turned out it was the master cylinder. Sorta hopin it is the slave... I'm skint

If clutch is stuck on it's unlikely to be cylinders. master or slave. squealing suggests some thing isn't turning when it should be. so warped clutch (unlikely to affect pedal or pushrods.) or release bearing seized. Which will prevent clutch from disengaging.

Had the same problem with mine today. Put 2 NEW brit part masters on over the last month which leaked so put Lucus on at weekend and today pedal got lower and lower. Had to pump it all the way home. Just gonna try and bleed it tomorrow to see what happens.

ok it turns out its the thrust bearing. ive been quoted £300 parts an labour... Good or not? DIY possible?

Told ya so

release bearing (proper name) is about £5 if your fitting new clutch then clutch kit inc bearing is about £80

you then have choice of rad out and engne as far forwards as you can swing it or engine out completely or gear & transfer box out.

Redhand, I should never have doubted you :p I think I'll have to hand it to a garage. Don't really have the equipment and no garage and I don't think the street is a good idea in this weather. Thanks anyway mate. I'll let you know how it goes...

make sure they don't just do the bearing

Was your flywheel ok? How many miles has your truck got on it. My release baring squeels every morning, but goes after a minute and my clutch judders for the first 15 mins, after that all is well. Mine has only got 55k on it.

I got it done at a garage and he didn't mention anything about the flywheel. Mines got 144k on it. I didn't have any squealing until it was undrivable. I drove to work and I noticed my clutch pedal sinking. Then as I was parking it was either on or off. Then tried it at lunch at it wouldn't stop squealing...
