Clunky drive

Hi all - i have a problem that seems to be slowly getting worse. I have a loud "clicking/clunking" coming from either the front axle or transfer box particularly when under heavy load. It does it both on lock and when strait ahead. Ive check prop ujs (one has a bit of play and will be replaced but i dont think its that. Was particularly noticeable yesterday with all the windows open going up hill thro a tunnel!
Any ideas please guys - and gals?

I had this problem just the other week, clicking/clunking/rattle under load.

Turn out it was my Transfer box.

Cost me £160, for the box, oil, oils for seals both output bearings an new nylocks.

took me around 5 hours, i think this is a little longer than usual. Never done one before and I had to strip my cubby box out which had my CB and other toys in so it all had to be disconnected.

Its definatly a 2 man job and sometimes two man and a trolley jack, the Tbox weighs a tonne and is very un-balanced.

Damn - thats not good news - did you ever find out what part had failed and if its repairable? Once up to speed mine seems to run nice and smooth. I fitted this one about 3 years ago - off fleabay its 1.22 ratio and i thought it was a good buy!!

I havnt had chance to strip the old box down yet, but alot of large metal bits were stuck to the magentic drain plug, and also alot more bits came out with the oil.

I no there is usually small bits stuck to the magent but these pieces were bigger than usual.

However my noise got louder the faster i went and didnt smoothen out.

So you may not have the same problem!

Reading though various posts, the noise made by knackered CV joints most fits my symptons but mine does it in a straight line too when under heavy load - do knackered Cvs do this?

you can get wear on the splines on the gearbox output shaft to the tfer box this gives the same symtoms ,mine did it for years dont be toooo rough on it and all being it will last for years ,mine did
i only changed it when changing the g\box,it does make a loud CLONK though,most disconcerting,,,dave
ps its a PIG to do,g\box and t\fer box stripdown :doh:

Hi Dave - yes ive got all the usuall backlash probs but this is a loud click click click!
