Cleaning sticky park brake

I dont think slackening the cable is a natural consequence of reading:

"Cable adjustment should not be used to take up brake shoe wear "

If you're just plugging through the manual following the instructions, that sentence only leads you to not adjust the cable to take up wear.

Joining the dots is what you mechanics get paid the big bucks for

Must be something in the air as mine has started to do this, so I will be out at the weekend spanners in hand slackening cables and adjusting shoes, and I might even make a cup of tea.

But it doesn't lead you to slacken the cable off first, do the adjustment then tweak the cable back up as advised. Joe Bloggs plugging through the manual is going to just adjust up the shoes, then adjust the cable up. They aren't going to slacken it first unless they are mechanically clever

you're too far from me or I'd bring a thermos and show you how to do it Hardest bit was turning the cable adjuster back as mine was a little bit corroded. once it freed up, piece of ****.

Ok TAH, wrong foot back in step now. I must admit i totally misunderstood what you said, reading it again i see that. But it really is a fundimental mistake that some make even with modern self adjusting brakes. The self adjusters seize up and the handbrake stops working. So the plank in the garage adjust the cable. Not the thing to do. The brake must be stripped adjusters freed off and shoes put in proper relation to drum. Then the cable is adjusted. Unless you have had your car up over it's axles in mud and water it is unusual for the handbrake to be contaminated. As the drum acts like a big spin drier and throws all the crap out.

i actually was surprised how clean it all was under there! do-able on the driveway. although the wife isnt best imprssed with the tiny drips from the diff..lol

Anyway i though Land Rover had built in a automatic oiling system for hand brake. Every P38 has at least some sort of ATF leak from rear output bearing oil seal. I know for a fact mine will never go rusty. Cause i have new seal sat in front of me on comp desk. Not fitted it yet.
