Just to get it off my chest really, but might be illuminating for others as innocent as me.....

Chirpy noise from front left hub I thought (with bit of clunk changing from forwards to reverse) so bought wheel bearings as first idea....

Of course while I'm in there I'll need to put in those new brake pistons and seals that have been on the shelf for a few weeks now....

So caliper off, luvverly new Zeus pistons and seals, hub off, luvverly new bearings inside and out, no obviously bad wear on the old ones though. New pads, bleed brakes - test up the road (yes, I know very bad with only one side done) - still chirpy/clonky.

Right hand hub - caliper and seals of course - last of the four pistons only two dust seals, no primary seal - curses. Remove other 3 dust seals on the basis that pilot error most likely, but no, all present and correct. Dear Zeus packers miscounted...... (I don't hold it against them, should have checked before I started like the other 3 calipers, but got complacent, and their kit is fab). Rescued the best of the old seals (which were in good nick it must be said - since the inboard pistons clearly hadn't been moving much for quite some time..!!), and finished that.

Hub off - 'thats odd, the stub axle moves up at least quarter inch....'

Good deal of movement on lower swivel, so bought new bearings, and will have to do that tractor seal that's been seeping for a few years now.

Stub axle off, swivel off (ye Gods those bolts take some shifting!) - the tattered remains of the upper swivel bearing tinkle into my hand..... bit of cage and about 4 rollers!! Back to Dingocroft - lovely new pin and bearing.

Consolation is the cv is running smoothly so that can do another 200k....!

New bearings inside and out, gaskets/seals etc - renovated caliper on and bleed brakes....

Spread over 4 days due to work and way too darned cold in the evenings outside - but good job all round......... Only trouble is I suspect the chirpy clunky behaviour might have been none of the above - those prop shaft UJ's that have sat on the shelf for months might be in use later this week....!!

Lesson - bottom swivel play can be sign of top swivel collapse...
Count your piston seals when they arrive.
Get a darned good lever for undoing axle flanges and stub axles.
Put the track rod swivel back in its hole as you lift the swivel assembly back on otherwise you'll have to undo the top bearing again to give enough play to locate the swivel.... don't aslk how I know this.....

Enjoyed it - and the steering is even better than it already was after the drop arm replacement last month! Nice feeling of confidence in all those new bits, especially opposing brake pistons moving now.

Cheers, A
