I have a 1988 3.5EFI Vogue SE Auto which I bought in April. It starts and runs OK but has always felt sluggish and has to be pushed to go past 50-55mph. And I get about 10mpg (gulp)
I took advantage of the Mrs being otherwise occupied today and whipped out the dizzy to give it a good checkover and found that the vacuum advance unit has failed.
The vacuum advance unit/linkage doesn't seem inclined to move at all, and the diaphragm is definitely split. The base plate itself moves freely.
Does anyone know what I can expect from fixing this? Better performance? MPG? Anything else?
Anyway, more expense! The cheapest I can find anywhere is about £47 incl VAT and P&P, unless anyone knows better?
Also, the vacuum pipe from the plenum to the dizzy has a one way valve in it (the proper part number is ERC6997). On mine the valve is marked DIST on one side and CARB on the other. Strangely though, the valve seems to work the wrong way i.e. it blocks suction from the DIST side to the CARB side but allows air to flow the other way. Does anyone know why, or what the function of this valve is? I will refit it the other way so that the vacuum will reach the dizzy.
