Arse!
So my old engin e died and I got another from gay bay. The seller said it ran fine and just smoked a little on start up , I have no reason to doubt this , he seemed like a nice chap.
The engine is a 1990 with 200k.

Anyhow, I bled it and bled it until im sure I got all the air out.

At idle it misses randomly and chuffs out white smoke. The tappets need adjusting but I cant see that causing a random miss.

When driving it pulls really well and compared to my last 19j its really quick , but its leaving a cloud of white smoke behind it.

No oil in water or water in oil.

So far ive swapped out the injectors and replaced the boost diaphragm and lift pump.

Any ideas? I think ive got all the air out but I will use some clear pipe on the end of the leak off just to be sure.

I doubt if its air causing the misfire. Are you sure all injectors are good. Have you tested them?
Chuffing white smoke from where? Exhaust or Rocker cover?

I would definitely set the tappets first.

Its out the exhaust, the injectors came out of my old engine , it ran pretty well.
I'm going to crack on with the tappets and see if that helps.

Set em first, see how it goes.
Did you use the injector pump off old engine too? And are you sure the pump timing is good?

White smoke can be any number of things. I adjusted the tappets and took it around the block , it goes like a rocket but still chuffing.
Lack of fuel can cause white smoke so I upped the idle slightly and it made it a lot better.
Now the lumpy idle has gone but every now and then it still wobbles and a puff of smoke comes out.
Its a random miss so I'm thinking its not mechanical.

Because I have no idea of this engines history, I dont know if it's been laid up for example I might just run it for a few days to see if it clears.

I have a clear pipe on the leak off between the last two injectors and I'm getting air in there, I've bled it and tightened up all the unions in the fuel system, I cleared out the hole in the bleed banjo ontop of the filter which was blocked so that wasnt helping.

The gauze on the inlet on the distributor pump was clear as was the gauze on the pick up pipe in the tank.

The only thing I can think of now is the fuel filter however the old engine ran fine on this filter, all the lines are clear and kink free so I can only see the filter as being the only fuel restriction unless the pump itself is shot.

I had a similar problem on my S3. Some idiot had joined a new piece of fuel line in with an 8mm pushfit fitting. These are OK (-ish) when under pressure, but highly suspect when fitted to the suction side. It took a bit of finding as the fitting was hidden behind the chassis. New fuel line from tank to pump, and the bubbles disappeared.
