choke

i am completely failing to understand the way my choke works. i would expect revs to increase as i pull the choke out - as the engine warms up the engine might start to hunt and pulse when the choke is full out, and revs decrease, however, if i pushed the choke all the way in (with the engine hot) i would expect revs to increase and then decrease as i pulled the choke out. my series 3 2.2 petrol doesn't seem to work this way. revs decrease smoothly the more choke is applied, whether hot or cold. at full choke there is no hunting. in fact, i am starting to suspect that my choke works the wrong way round. but that would be stupid. wouldn't it?

from your answer, i guess not. i was advised by a guy in the REME t oreplace the carb with a weber one at the earliest opportunity. good idea?

depends what you want from it. i think the weber may use more fuel but i'm not too sure on that. the army carbs work ok if they are tuned correctly. stick a co² guage up it and check it.
replacment webers are around 60squid i reckon.
i may have one if i every get these twin webbers glued on mine

i'm getting about 15mpg out of it at the moment - i was hoping the weber might improve that. i need to check the plugs tomorrow to see if it is running rich, it's not smoking too bad (bit of white, wet smoke on startup, clears after a few minutes). not got a CO2 tester, so it might be a trip to the garage...

I have a weber carb, love it (also because I can get parts here in Canada from the local parts store.) Is there any chance that you have an air leak either at the base of the carb or at the manifold to block. That might cause you some issues similar to what you are discribing. Spray a little ether around the base of the carbwhen it is running and if the engine revs up a bit then you have a leak. Be careful though that the manifold is not hot yet as the ether might ignite....

this is fgood advise to work out whether you have a leak but the manifold would need to be extremely hot for the ether to ignite.
