chassis#/vin on LWB series III

I'm belatedly having to register my 1974 LWB series III here in
New Mexico (got to sell it as I'm leaving, hence need to register
it). Life is going to be much easier if it has two chassis-No.s/VINs.
The one on the inside bulkhead is a doddle to find but the one
that supposedly resides on the right hand front spring hanger is
proving elusive. So where exactly should I be looking? (My guess
is that the original hanger and number are actually a pile of rust in
a landfill somewhere, but thought I should give it a bit more effort
rather than shrug and give up). Detailed descriptions with pictures,
diagrams, scale models, etc.. gratefully received.

cheers
Tony

P.S. Anyone who wants a diesel 109 in the US southwest, feel free
to holler.

I've got an SIII with the number stamped onto the chassis above
the left hand side rear wheel. God knows if that is the correct position
as CKD models seem to have numbers all over the place. I think SIIIs
are too old for a proper VIN with a three letter country and
manufacturer code - maybe the very late ones.

AFAICR most of the later Series 2 and 3 didn't have any chassis numbers in
the UK, But I don't think it would do any harm to get a set of punches and
duplicate the number on the plate on to the chassis somewhere, you would
only be making the VIN more permanent, you could always ask the relevant
authorities first in case there is a problem with that.

My 1972 SIII has the chassis number on the front right suspension
hanger, I had to scrape off a lot of waxoil and crap to find it but
it's there, and matches the V5 fortunately!.

official place is on the front spring hanger, about an inch above the bolt
and somewhat to the rear. However, if the dumb-iron has been replaced then
the original number is lost unless it got re-stamped.

should be on the inside edge (nearest the radiator) too.

Mine had one there before i chopped it off to replace the front
chassis leg. If the auhorities ever get picky i shall stamp one back
on there again wih my punches!

Many thanks to all. I really did try and check the front right spring
hanger as thoroughly as possible but still didn't see anything, the
rather good condition of this section of chassis suggests new iron.
However, I struck gold on the bodywork behind the driver's door.
My model was a special build for the Tarmac corporation (big UK
civil engineering company) and has a brass plate saying so, on the
sill behind the door. I got so used to it being there that I never paid

it much heed, but lo and behold it has the chassis#/vin stamped on it.
My wife's kind of unimpressed that I missed that one, but I'm hoping
that I can earn some kudos for having a second chassis number in a
place that no-one has ever claimed before for a series III (and I've
scoured the web pretty hard, I can assure you).

Spent most of today tackling the local MVD (kind of like the DVLA
but more bureaucratic). Got tripped up by the lack of DVLA export
document. I sent off for that about a month or so back (forgot to
do it at the time and it never really cropped up 'til now), but have
heard nothing since. Anyone have any experience of how long it
should take (times a ticking, and I'm getting anxious).

cheers
Tony
