well I failed the MOT today as a small hole was found on the n/s chassis crossmember that fits in front of the fuel tank and the upper link arms (A frame) attach too. That small hole is now a big one as I have been tapping away at it to try and find good metal. YRM don't do a repair piece for this, does anyone know of a source for a new crossmember for this area and the bolt on brackets that attach to this to take the upper link arms? If not, is my only option (aside from a new chassis) to try and find a scrap chassis to cut this piece out from? (There isn't enough good metal to weld a patch to so that isn't really an option)
Vehicle is a 1998 300 TDI 110 station wagon

Hi Hoggie, Not sure if the cross member is same on the 110 as it is on a 90 but have my old 300tdi 90 chassis sitting on my driveway, I was going to cut it up tomorrow to get it scrapped but you're welcome to the cross member and brackets.

Thanks mate I really appreciate the offer. Looking at both chassis on the Marsland website they seem near identical so I would like to take you up on your offer. Can you pm me me your contact details and I will email or call
Thanks David

It might pay you to have a good look at the rest of the chassis , as tacking bits on should be a warning sign that
there are other spots and a not very strong/safe chassis

The rest of the chassis is good. It has had a few patches on the main chassis rails when I first bought it and had a new rear crossmember fitted by the PO. The front to the middle has always been well preserved by the oily bits and the rest was wax oiled but too late for this particular crossmember. In fact being a station wagon it has another smaller crossmember above this one to support the rear floor and that is solid so the demise of the suspension crossmember is strange but who knows what has happened to it in the last 17 years!

I had rot in exactly the same area appear a few years back on my 1994 90 despite rigorously waxoyling the thing every year.
I searched for the same replacement cross member but couldn't source one. In the end I got a good local fabricators to to take up the rear floor and build one for me. They did an excellent job however after all the material used/hours of labour it cost almost £1000! I still went ahead as I was shure the rest of the chassis was solid and also at the time I couldn't afford a rechassis.
2 years on and I'm having real problems with the main rails, outriggers, dumb irons and spring supports! I'm now sending it in for a new galv chassis as I've no option really. I just wish I would have done it 2 years ago and saved myself the money!
You can get a new chassis supplied and fitted with a few extras at the same time for around 3k. My advice would definately be save your pennies and get a new chassis if the rest of your truck is in decent condition.
It won't necessarily add that value if you sold it but would give you a solid platform for a very long time. And you'll only be prolonging the inevitable if you repair it.

All the best if you do though, I'll happily send you some photos of my repair job at the weekend if you wanted them?

Thanks for the insight Noggin. I have been researching chassis swops as I think I have realised I will have to do this in the long term so I will be taking your advice. Cube on this forum has offered me the one from his old chassis and I think I will graft that on for now. That should get me my MOT and back on the road and allow me to save the £3.5k I would need.
I am fairly sure the rest of the chassis is sound and mechanically it is great I just need to get a couple of years out of the current chassis and hopefully the crossmember I get from Cube will do the trick for now. Interesting that you too wax oiled religiously and I think this particular crossmember is just hard to get at and never gets fully treated

hi hogie, no worries..
I think to be honest my chassis was already thinking about retirement when i bought it 5 years ago. I didn't know it at the time but it had started to rot from the inside out so i think my waxoyling had little affect really, i guess it must have had a hard working life although i didn't know. Just a few weeks ago i stripped the rear half of the chassis from all the old waxoyl, paint and loose rust and then treated it with POR15 rust converter and then POR15 paint to hopefully keep it hangin' on in until next spring when my new frame will be fitted. So far i can highly recommend the POR15, it was fairly easy to paint on and has given a super hard waterproof finish, but ill have to see how long it lasts. It might be worth having a look at though once you repaired yours.
Anyway i think the transplant from Cube's chassis is a fantastic idea! it'll save you a tonne of measuring, fabrication and materials. and if all goes well it should give you a few more years chassis life, exactly what the repair on mine did as it gave me about 2 years to save up as i didn't have the funds back then but desperately wanted to keep my 90 on the road.
cheers

1998? My 'fender was by the sea when i bought it! and the only things i had to replace were rear x member, a rear outrigger, a front outrigger, a bit of patchwork on the front, okay maybe that's alot but 29 years and me swan neck is fine!

Mine spent 12 years in West Glamorgan and everything has been full of sand so who knows what it was up to. then one year in Kent and the last 3.5 with me. That's the problem with buying any old vehicle I guess

Yea, really is. Most kilometers on the clock were done doing journeys from holland to france, france holland. I THINK i'm the 3rd owner. It's had a hard life, still not ready to give up, mind ;)
But it spent about 5 months in Brittany, Quimper, by the sea... did not do the chassis any good :) Chassis looking better than ever, now.

That's lovely PF, both the build and your workshop! Having seen your project and Phillips (Cube1729) when I went to pick up a chunk of his old chassis I kinda feel that just grafting a new /old crossmember is not quite cutting the mustard but needs must

You wanna go the full way, right? It's easy with basic mechanical skills and a bit of patience. Also, hard work. I don't know how many times i came back indoors with frozen hands, because i was working with petrol, diesel, wd40, all that (mainly petrol) sinks in to yer skin and freezes, absolutely horrible. If you are going down to bear chassis, paint it up! atleast the axles... Gloss black, looks great! You just need a compressor and spray gun, but if you really can't afford them, paint it by hand! it's a tratter ffs!
Also, thanks ;)

Thanks Gemsdad. If I go the chassis swop route I will pm James to see if it is possible. Right now I just want to get an MOT and back on the road . I know I will be without a car for a few weeks if I swop the chassis and I need some time to plan that
