Hey all, I just bought Lightweight and the chassis number starts LLBAH on the plate inside the cab next to the wheel as well as in the engine compartment. The numbers on the v5 match these as well. I have just read that all vin or chassis numbers were supposed to start with SAL. Is this something I should be concerned about or it this common. All of the other plates I have seen star with SAL so I am wondering why mine is different. The chassis has been replaced so I can't cross check that number.

Thank you,
Doug

All,

Any help at all would be helpful. I was looking at some of the old paperwork from where the PO bought it from MOD and it too did not have the SAL at the beginning of the vin only the last 14 digits. It also had the MOD reg wich matches the plate next to the steering wheel. I guess I am asking if other Lightweights out there (after 79) have their chassis start off with LBBAH. Thank you in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Doug

Thanks Blackburn,

This is not what I needed but a good reference. I was able to find the answer after searching through other forums. From what I gather as Land Rover was switching from the chassis numbers to vin numbers there was a small period of time Late 1979 to the end of 1980 where the VIN stamped on the plate and chassis were 14 digits instead of 17. The first three digits of SAL were not displayed on these vehicles. Not sure why but it seems that a few people over the years have been asking this question without a good answer. I just wanted to make sure my new lightweight was not misidentified. Looks like it is a bit easier to narrow down the build timeframe based off the lack of the SAL on the vin. If you add the SAL to the vin and put it into a vin calculator it will come up with my details (reg, build date etc). I will however be getting a heritage cert to go with my new land rover to ensure there is no issues in the future.

Thanks again,
Doug
