Hello,

I am new to the forum ( posted into the intro section).

I was hoping to get some advice. I am looking at a 2003 Silver Disco 2 GS - 2,500 GBP with 140K miles.
The owner has kept the car for 4 years , covered up ( car cover) under a porta roof and done literally 4K miles in 4 years.

He sent me picture of the chassis and he had it Waxoyled ( bits of it) - so not a professional full treatment.

This makes it difficult to see rot on the Chassis. He says there is just surface rust and the MOT doesn't show anything about rot - just rust.

I have looked through the buying guide - but I cant find any pictures that specifically say "yep it can look like this and it is still worth saving or nope this is a welding job"..

Oh forgot to mention the car is 450 miles away from me - so I can't check until I fly down on the basis it looks good enough to buy.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Those pictures do not tell you much. The waxoyl could be hiding a world of sins, but it does not look like it was well applied, plus was the inside done?

The chassis tend to rot from the inside out, so it needs some tender loving tapping with a light hammer, listen to how it sounds. The seam that joins the chassis rails in the bottom of them tends to blow out. plus as I mentioned in the other post, the area behind the rear spring in the chassis can also rot out.

Cheers

Ryan, exactly what @neilly said, but to be honest I would save on the air fair!! Look at those pics, that ain't wax oil it looks like a very poor attempt to under seal the chassis. There is tell tail overspray on the shocks - if it had been done some time ago that would not be vissable. It looks to me like it's been masked to help the sale!

Thanks Guys , really appreciated! - was almost a click away from buying it! . Will wait for and look out for a better one. Cheers guys, really appreciate the input!

Just out of interest, in case there is someone more local that may be interested in looking at it, where is it? £2k5 may be a bit steep but someone may be able to beat a good deal out of it...

Kin ell, that is one mental "underseal" job.

Looks like it's been applied on top of the dirt and rust? But only on downward facing surfaces in some places.

And except the rear radius arm. They really made sure that rear radius arm got a right good seeing-to.

Mindboggling.

Had a look at the history, The things on the history match up to what has been so far.
Only outstanding things are

  • Nearside Front Trailing arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement (2.4.G.2)
  • Signs of wear in steering drop arm ball joint
I assume steering drop arm is a ball joint?
