Hi folks - first post here and not happy news.

My 97 V8 has just failed it mot on two areas which need welding, the first is near one of the rear seat belt mounting points and not too much of an issue. The second however is at one of the body mounting points (the one about half way along the drivers door) - [ETA sill, not chassis as title suggests].

The garage have said that it is repairable, but are stating that the only way to do it correclty will be to jack one side of the body off the chassis (or both sides if it will not move enough), in order to fully repair the area. This would include putting new plates in both the lateral and longitudinal areas of corrosion (if you see what I mean).

The quote for the work is about £300 plus vat and materials for this area alone. Does anyone have any experience of making a repair in this area and have any alternative recommendations as to a way forward. I have doubts as to the degree of success which will be encountered if they try to undo the mounting bolts on a vehicle this old and in this condition - which will only lead to the repair costs rising.

Currently just considering saying sod it and chucking it on ebay as is with no mot  (which 'er in doors would love with an up and coming wedding:rolleyes:).

Thanks for any advice offered.

my immediate reply is "bollix". All of the inner sill to floor support brackets come as psrt of s new inner sill (check out YRM) and i have never heard of anyone jacking the body off the chassis to do that job. Support the body - maybe, to stop it dropping. I suggestyou get a couple more quotes. Or do it yoself.

£60 buys you a new inner sill, or bite the bullet and get both inner and outer for £120

It'll probably be just as bad once you start stripping and at least once it's done you know it'll be right for you!

available from YRM for £49.50 - if you want the outer sill as well - they are £19.75.

you might be able to just get away with the mount tho - ask anyone with a scap disco to cut it out for you. - like so....

weld it your sulf and you will save a lot of money

In fairness to the garage the visable rust is often only the tip of the iceburg. You may well find that the rust has travelled along some of the seams as well and part of the floor will need replacing too (you can't weld to rusty metal). They may well have allowed for this in the price. Still the 'jack up the body' bit suggests that they might not have done this to a Discovery before........it would be true of a monocoque car body but there is enough stiffness in a Discovery body shell to make this unnessacary.

YRM (as suggested) do very good replacement parts and are worth using.

Thanks for the replies.

Having seen the repair panel available I can only assume that this is an area which it is not unusual to have to replace. The original intent had been to take the Discovery off the road in 10 -12 months time anyway to sort any areas which required attention (plus a touch of modifying) so it looks like this may just be happening a bit earlier than planned with the work to follow as and when.

Having had a quick google on the subject of replacing this area, there do seem to be couple of concise write ups which should help – just looks like I need to learn how to weld!!

Apologies if I’ve got people jumping up and down with the question – I’ll try and ask something less contentious next time like...maybe……what tyre size can I fit ;)

Cheers
