hey guys,

As already said that my rear cross memberwas welded last year, but on the other cross member the old welding from when ever it was done is starting come apart.

check the pic

then at the front of the landy, just behind the main strut, before the steering box, there is a small triangle support, in the corner of this I was able to pop my screwdriver through it yesterday.

the rest of the chasis seems very solid, esp the main strusts running along the whole lengh of it.

so what would you do in my situation? replace the rear cross member, replace the front, replace it all or just weld it up.

is on a 1991, defender 90 200tdi

patch it up to get thru the mot, if its done well with nice welds and primed and painted, shoot some under seal / wax oil in it thru a hole and yer good fer aslong as it lasts, thers patches on mine from 20 years ago, if ther done right.

If it has started to go and you can afford it i would go for a Galvo chassis because you will probably spend most of the galvo chassis money on welding in the years to come (If you can't weld yourself!).

Also, Don't forgot that chassis rust from the inside out so you won't really know the condition of it.

If you can't afford a galvo chassis i would strip it down (Body off) and then you can truely see the condition of the chassis. The top rails below the tub could have gone ect ect. If it is repairable, repair it and underseal the whole thing...

90truckcab, ya got one oni order :) how much it cost ya? But, are you going to install it? or get someone els to? its a big job right! I was just speaking to someone and he said £1500 for a galv chasis, and once taken it all apart worth changing everything els, props, shocks, spings, brakes etc and I be looking at about 4k. sounds right?

oh also for wedling is it worth getting a "proper" garage to do the welding ie peter scotts, than a friend of a friend from his workshop? cos long time better etc...

Honestly depends on the welder. Just because it costs more does not mean it will be a better standard!

and there be my problem lol. who to trust. the guy who did it cheap last year, well its still looks sounds. I was wondering about buying a welder, going on a course and learning another trade. easy as that? thinking a good welder be about £350? but seen em for 100 and for 2000. hmmm

is taken of the body a simple job and would it break anything by taking it off. I guess I mean is it simple to take off and pop back on and wont break anything that needs replacing in the mean time? im new to this landrover lark. :-O but loving it

yer u can remove wings easy enough if uve got a few spanners. cant think of anything you could break doing that :D is urs a truck cab or has it got a bak to it?

i'd bet good money that once you start scraping off that black goo you'll be finding plenty to keep a welder busy

£200 will buy a welder more than up to doing the repairs - doing them bit by bit keeps the vehicle mobile and is affordable - having to spend a grand + on a new chassis would makes me think I'd bought the wrong vehicle - unless you got it VERY cheap

stripping the body is the easy bit, make a note of how yer did it, carefully remove all the electrical componants in a way that you can get them back in,
my self i would replace everything once the chassis is stripped, marsland chassis cost £1045-00 , thats it, :) then yer spend weekend after weekend swappin all yer bits over, takes time , and yer will find thers broken bits as yer uncover more,

thers a guy on ebay that does a chassis swap complete, and all the work for £2k

i have one coming fer a series 2a too,

am not too fussed what me series costs me as im not selling it, but yer wanna watch what yer 90 costs as yer wont get it back , having spent 2k, then another 2k , is it worth 4k??
