Hi all, i've got a 94 300tdi disco and i noticed that when i was changing my wheels and tyres over to my new set, there was oil all over the inner rear tyre so i've gone out and bought new discs, pads, bearings and oil seal. I've already changed everything but i've noticed that oil is leaking out of the other side now so i'm assuming that i've not fitted the oil seal properly.
When i fitted the oil seal, i used the outer shell of the old bearing and a hammer to tap it into the hub but i only went in till it was flush even though i could have gone further, is this where i'm going wrong?, should i be tapping it in as far as it will go?

Any help will be appreciated, cheers jamie.:)

i thought it was the calipers at first, i even bought a new set from paddocks because of the oil which had gathered up round the old caliper, but when i came to change them i realised the oil was just from braking and i could see it was coming from the inside of the disc area.

as for the number of seals, i was only given 1 with the bearing kit for each side from paddocks, i told them i needed every part to get the job done, so i'm not sure.

are you sure you put the seal in the right way round? an easy mistake to make.
(he says from experience).

good point!!, i'm not sure, i was given 2 seals but because they only had 1 left of 1 make, they gave me another make for the 2nd, 1 of the seals had a spring round part of it and i think it was pointing in towards the bearing when i was tapping it in, should it have been the other way? also, when you did yours, did you tap the seal in as far as it would go or just so it was flush with the face of the hub?, cheers.

pointing in to the bearing is correct.
flush is correct.

is it axle oil or bearing grease that's leaking?
if it's axle oil, it could be the seal inside the stub axle.

If ye're on about the outer seal, then the lipped side should face outwards (same for inner seal). Should go in this way.....

if you cant decide between axle oil or brake fluid smell it axle/diff oil stinks something like cat**** n pepper mixed brake fluid is oily

it's definately axle oil as the diff was nearly empty when i topped up, as for the stub axle seal, i'm sure it's not that as the other side has started leaking since i did the work and that side was fine to start with, i only changed the bearings and seal because i'd bought new pads and discs, i think i'll have to borrow my mates haynes just to check:confused:

If it's deffo axle oil, then there's another couple of seals that'll probably need changin'. There's one inside the stub axle behind a bronze bush....

If both sides are leaking, the breather's probably blocked.

just checked the breather today and it was blocked, so hopefully that will sort the problem once i get a new one. It looked like it's been blocked for some time judging by the amount of crap in the banjo and the pipe:eek:,

Cheers for the help everyone.:)
