I thought I better think about changing the engine/fuel type on the v5 for me defenderer but reading up on dvla website I’m not sure how to proceed. This is what evidence they want, but since I didn’t buy the engine/gearbox or pay a garage to fit it I’m a bit stuck. Only thing I can think of is to do the changes on the v5 and include an explanation and hope they read it

Find a friendly local old skool garage and ask them if they can inspect it and wrote you a letter on headed note paper. That’s what I had to do.

receipt for the engine the guy I bought it from did me a receipt on Microsoft word which the DVLA accepted - could you *make* a receipt?
Mine was a bit easier as I wasn’t changing fuel type

Friendly garage not a problem I don’t think but the advice said for a garage only if the conversion carried out before I got the vehicle. I’ll maybe just make up a receipt and get the chap who gave me the complete discovery to sign it

Yer but it was done before you got it wasnt it, garage/engineers report/inspection is the way we done it before accepted without an issue.

Things must have tightened up a load since I last did this.
Got given an MG metro and took the engine out of it to put it in my Mini.
Rang the DVLA, all they were interested in was when peeps tried to say they had put a smaller engine in a car to try and get cheaper road tax. Didn't even ask for any receipts, nowt. Just took my word for the engine number.

I have that option of just send changes on v5 and seeing what they come back with but if it goes on too long it will be ready to mot but no paperwork :(

Cool, my receipt ;) had the vin of the engine I removed and the vin of the engine I put in on it. The receipt for the engine had that vin on it. Made for a nice paper trail.

I am sure it’s to do with theft and crime rather than any other reason.

may insurance company didn’t want any proof at all, they just said as long as it was roadworthy and registered correctly they would just record it as an engine replacement.

Recently noticed on the v5 for my dad's lightweight (24v FFR) it's down as a diesel.. it's always been a petrol engine, never had a diseased engine in its life

When I replaced the 4pot petrol in the 90 with a V8 in 2018 I sent the DVLA an updated V5C and a letter with the details and number of the original and replacement engines and a receipt for the replacement engine listing the registration of the donor vehicle and the engine number. Got a new updated V5C a month later.

Mine says 'Declared manufactured 1988' hence the E reg but it was built according to the Gaydon Heritage Certificate in June 1985. Was exported when but not reg in UK until 1988. Looking to see if I can change the reg to it's build date, B ?

I did an engine swap a couple of years back, I just sent off the V5 with the new engine number, no receipt or letter and received an updated V5.
I suspect that DVLA only get giddy if you are changing to a cheaper tax class, or changing from dirty diesel to petrol.
The rules will have 8ugger all to with stolen parts, DVLA are a tax collection agency, they don't give a toss about stolen vehicles.

I’m changing from dirty diesel to super clean, environmentally friendly petrol. :)
