Well towed my caravan with my P38 2.5 DSE Manual Range Rover last weekend. What fun (Not)

This car is very underpowered to pull a caravan of this size, so i am now looking at changing for a 4.0 SE Auto Petrol.

Can anyone give some some info on the maintainance of this engine.

I have only had diesel cars for the past 10 years .

Is it a good engine?

The one i am looking at has 105000 miles on the clock with some service history, Is this a lot for this engine?

Are they any good to convert to lpg?
If so can anyone recomend a type of system to look aout for?

Thanks :D

I have a 2001 4.6 running lpg. And it pulls like a train. It's done about 106000 now.
I may be selling it soon though.

Have you tried chipping your diesel?
The BMW, being a 6 cylinder, is low on bottom end torque but when chipped is better than the Tdi series engines. But it really does need revs which is different to most diesels you'll have driven before. Ironically it needs to be driven more like a petrol to keep things rolling.
Before you take the plunge on a petrol try and get a spin in a chipped one. The V8 is a wonderful engine and the auto is particularily well suited to towing but the fuel economy is horrendous when towing. My 3.9 RRC gives 10mpg on petrol with a 3 axle ifor williams carrying 1.5 tonne. A big caravan is going to be something close to that with a 4.0 or 4.6. My chipped DSE auto gives 18 to 20 with the same trailer.

I must agree, before chipping my dhse was gutless but since being done it pulls my 1600kg caravan easily. And all for £100 and 20 mins to fit it !!

Try superchips and get a proper remap done, bit more expensive but much more reliable than one of these plug in box efforts, a remap should be done in conjunction with a rolling road so they can remap accordingly and get the best performance

stick with your diesel and chip it i have a chipped diesel and it pulls like a dozer my mate has a standard 4litre and its cack he cant keep up with me on the level let alone up hills his only gets 18 to the gallon at best yet mine is comfy doing 26 around town 35 on a run with my fold up on the back that ways 900 kg dont know any one in your area but you can use raceevo in the mids he does a postal and he is bang on with any diesel chipping think the website is raceevo.com
