My cambelt tensioner squeaks like a trapped mouse. But amplified 100 times. It is brand new (well, it's done 3,000-4,000 miles now) and has apparently squeaked since new.

Personally, I'd have taken it back to the garage, but the previous owner obviously did not.

Now, I don't intend on replacing it myself, but how long *should* it take for a professional?

Having looked at it, it looks like it's just one nut and 20 minutes work, but you never know...

Surely you mean the serpentine belt(alternator belt)tensioner-to change the cambelt tensioner, its crank pulley off and timing cover off-not recommended to re-tension old timing belt so new belt as well.
Serpentine belt tensioner is a ten minute job

hmm... so given that the aircon belt is not even present, the one that squeaks is the one on the only visible belt... i assume, therefore, that it's the serpentine belt!

I think i'll get it swapped...

£30 for the bit and 10mins work to swap...

You want a 2' breaker bar and 15mm(IIRC) socket - pull the tensioner back with the breaker bar and slide the belt from under the tensioner wheel then remove and replace the tensioner (one nut as you say) and refit the belt -done

In your OP you did say cambelt which as already posted by Biolandy it is hidden behind the front cover. The tensioner for the serpentine belt though is a 10 min job and easy to do.

Forgot to mention do a search titled "penny trick" on here, you will be surprised what you'll find especially as yours is quite new it may be worth trying.:)

unbelievable... you'd think it'd be relatively easy to make a tensioner true!

I've tried various lubricants on the tensioner all to no avail, which makes sense given that it's probably at an angle!
