its what holds the nut in to the stud all nuts have them

Oh yes, of course!!!! What a fool!! I forgot on L/Rovers, the threaded bolt is on the hub and not a separate bolt. But could I use the exposed thread to help get the locking nut off, thread something down it??

I will use the locking wheel nut that is currently one of the 3 holding the spare wheel on, when I can get the other one off the rear wheel.
