So I went and changed my disks, pads and calipers on the front. All was well, seemed to improve braking abit.
Although.....

After I changed the calipers and disks I realised I had brought the wrong pads, as it was the bank holiday I couldnt get the right ones so popped my old ones in, (plenty of wear left on them) had them in for a day, drove a few miles max and put brand new ones in as soon as I could. I can't be getting the best performance if the whole pad is not contacting the disk.

Before I changed them the old disks had some uneven wear on them, not sure if this is linked.

Any ideas?

Il get some photos in the morning.

Yes calipers, disks, pads and even got new caliper bolts.

The calipers are made by ap racing so not unbranded ones either.

If the calipers are brand new then you can rule out sticky pistons .The caliper is bolted to the leg so in theory that can't move just float .has someone put new bearings in but missed a bearing chim?

When you say chim do you mean the race for the bearing?? I done them myself and checked everything before I put it all back together. So if you mean the race then they are all in place.

Yeh sometimes there is a chim which the face of the bearing sits against have you had the truck from new .have you got a manual to check that all the parts are there incase a previous owner missed them .What side of the disc is wearing down .are they vented .seems odd that you had the problem before hand and still have the problem even with new calipers discs and pads something is not spaced correctly

No iv had it about 6months, it's a 1997 ninety.

The only shims I took out and put back in are the drive shaft shims and I have all the parts and followed the lr workshop manual all the way through apart from doing the end play on the drive shaft as I used the shims that were already there.

Surely he's saying the uneven wear was with the old calipers/pads/discs, so could well have just been a seized piston(s). If you've changed it all, which it sounds like you have, then don't worry about it. Just monitor the new discs/pads for any signs of uneven wear. Using the old pads for a few miles will not have caused any harm, other than perhaps affecting braking performance slightly as you have suggested.

Increased wear on the inboard pads is not uncommon on vehicles using in dirty conditions as that side of the disc is exposed to more much/dirt. Especially if you have removed the mud shields as many do.

You might just need to get a few more miles (actually stops) on them to get them bedded in fully. Remember if you do a lot of motorway miles that doesn't actually mean you use the brakes that much so they will take longer to bed in.

Old discs & pads often have signs of uneven wear on them, it tends to happen over time. If you put your old pads onto new discs then unless the old pads were COMPLETELY flat then they will rapidly make marks on the new discs (MUCH quicker than with new discs & pads).
Photos will speak a thousand words.

If the wear is even I wouldn't worry at all an the cost of pads are reasonable and if you can do the work yourself then your quids in anyway .I never count my many many hrs of work It's part of the fun .when my series is finished we are building a comp bug next plan to have a go at the challenge series .

That's a big part of the reason I bought the defender, I wanted to learn how to fix and maintain it all myself. Some parts I need help with as I haven't got the confidence or experience to do some of the bigger stuff yet but I suppose that will come with time. I do really enjoy it though, I've already lost count how many hours I have worked on or researched how to do different things. My goal is to have a go at swapping the chassis!
