Hi all,
I've got an aftermarket SONY head unit in my discovery that was in there when I got it. For some reason, every home-made CD I put in it plays the first 6 or 7 songs as normal, but then skips on all of the others, getting worse each time I try to play them.
It's doing my head in and scratching my CDs up as well which is a pain in the arse.

Anyone hazard a guess at what this is, and how to cure it?
Cheers.

Any number of reasons for this kind of thing, but my guess would be a worn disc spindle allowing the disc to wobble a bit while it plays.

The wobble remains the same no matter where the sled carrying the laser head is, but the further from the centre of the disc it gets, the more likely it is that the head will be unable to focus and the greater the chance of the disc and head coming into contact and sctratching the disc.

The first third of the disc the head will probably be able to focus and play OK but the further out it's more likely to skip.

Frankly, the costs of trying to repair the CD player will more than likely exceed the cost of a new head unit.

you are still burning cds?

jebus man you can get mp3 players for pennies now. You can even buy a mp3 fm transmitter for stingy buggers for a few quid. :p
