Just replaced the Clarion 6 CD changer in my '98 4.6 with a used unit.
The existing original head unit works as it should (even the cassette player), including all the steering wheel controls.
The old changer was totally kaput - no response to anything.

The replacement works perfectly - as long as it's standing on its rear panel.

Lay it flat as it would be in the rack and it throws an error 2 which is disc loading problem. I've had it apart and blown the dust & crap out - not much came out - and wiped the 2 long rubber loading rollers. I can't see any little mechanical flaps or latches that might be sticking . . .

The cassette looks clean and the black fabric liners are in place and unwrinkled, the CD's go in & out cleanly and it plays the tracks accurately, but only if it's vertical . . .

Anyone have any experience/ideas as to what it might be?

TIA - Alastair

I've already tried that, in all possible variants - as far as I can see, all they do is to slightly alter the position of the guts of the unit relative to the outer casing and the four rubber suspension dampers.

I've been testing it 'naked' (the unit - not me) anyway, so they don't have any effect, and there are no mechanical connections apart from the spring.

Not to worry - thanks Wammers - I've since taken the cartridge apart and cleaned it out - no obvious problems. Next stage is to try it at incremental angles to see just where the 'tipping point' is.
I'll also get an air duster and give whole unit a blast through in case there's some hidden crap gumming things up . . .
