Hi all, fitted my new cb radio today and tested it with a mate in his landy mine seems to cut out at 30 yrds. I can Cleary hear him but he can't hear a word from me? I've got a 5ft ariel onto body mount with the lead connected to that then straight to the unit ( TTI TCB 550) anyone guess what I've wired up wrong? Or common faults? I have not yet got out with swr and tested. Thanks. P.S there is no problem with his unit just my end.

Sounds like a bad earth on the aerial.
Was having this convo with Deasy tonight, and apparently, a common problem is people earthing their aerial to an alloy body or part of when it should actually be earthed to a steel point, ie, the chassis.

Try re-earthing the aerial - see how you get on and report back. :)

mine is earthed to the roof panel of my 90, cleaned off area of paint no probs with it so far and get a low swr reading

Standing Wave Ratio

the amount of rf reflected back down your aerial into your rig, too much and it goes bye bye

Yeah tht might be were I'm going wrong. I have the main input signal from the top bolt on my Ariel body mount then a second part of that cable which is connected to what looks like mesh that runs around the cable onto a second bolt, this second bolt is not connected to the ariel so its not that. Am I being stupid and have no earth comming of my Ariel??

Ah, ok.
I ask because I had a similar problem with my CB when it was wired into my old Disco, and, as it happens, I'm fitting it into my current Disco tomorrow - ready for the weekend.
Although at the (much) cheaper end and entry level of the market, it's not a very old CB at all so am hoping the aerial and earthing of - was the issue.

I'll report back once fitted tomorrow.

Also not sure if this is to do with it. When drivig the speaker on the unit will hum the engine rev noise unless I turn the squelch up??

theres an inner and an outer on the co-ax.

the inner goes to the aerial and also the centre hole in the rig.

the outer goes to the aerial base (to earth the groundplane) and the centre goes to the rig earth where you screw it in.

you need a substantial ground plane to get any distance out of a cb (it also helps when setting the swr)

thats why it's not brilliant when attached to bumpers or nudge bars, they are better in the centre of a metal roof.

ok thanks for that these are the pictures. I had no instructions so i guessed this is how it goes? sorry for bad quality the red is the main of the cable and connected the the ariel bolt. and the outer of the cable to the bottom of the mount.

bloody hell...how much interference are you getting through your rig with that.

it needs to be sheilded, is that a proper cb aerial

nowt wrong with earthing to an Alloy body at all I had a PSM?? Mount on the 90. and had an swr. of 1:1.5 well within range. and could chat to peeps upto 10/15 miles away.

Coax as said needs to be properly fitted to a proper plug. at both ends and preffereably soldered on.

RF Interference. ideally you want the cb wired direct to battery. and if the problem continues a suppressor fitting.

Personally I'd find someone who knows what's what and get them to install it properly. or failing that take it to an autoelectrician.

the bare wires.
i never saw a thunder pole like that, mind you the last time i had owt to do with cb was 30 years ago.

heres the wiring diagram for a pl259

The end that connects to the unit is proper job like that diagram just not the end at the aerial. Also what is it ment by tuning it, all i was told was this "You will need to check your SWR after you've fitted the system - if you don't you may have a pretty lousy range of transmission or damage the unit"

nope that's a PSM mount nowt wrong with it at all make sure that the plastic spacer is fitted to the bolt supplying the centre feed. in order to prevent it from earthing to the body. Make sure you have the backing plate fitted and that all the paint is removed from the inside of the tub where the plate is located.

tuning means adjusting the length of the aerial to minimise the amount of reflected waves.

it just means all the power is transmitted out of the aerial and not back into the rig.

what model number is your twig (aerial )

Ok thanks redhand. That may be were im going wrong, Did not remove any paint from the tub. The plastic spacer is fitted aswell its just probaly wrong haha. Thanks. Any clues to "tunning" my unit with swr ???
