Hi all,

Time to ask a stupid question!

Have been offered some general household carpet and underlay off cuts to fit out my Series 2A 2.25 petrol.
Not worried about fitting inside the rear tub, but wondered if issues would arise due to heat from the engine when fitted in the front cab area?

If anyone has fitted general household carpet, advise would be great on the type used.

Thanks. Neil

It will soon be wet and smell like an old dog or worse.

+1
Dead old dog, long dead. And dont even think about the smell when it gets wet inside (and it will!) or damp (even worse!)

Use plastic, some soft matts which dont take the water in. I'm uncomfortable about buying some still though, as all that I've found do not have any fire rating (meaning they go pooof in case of fire)

Not worried about it getting wet - light green lanes are the most it will see and all the holes causing previous leak are filled!

My holes were filled too, doesn't mean it wont get damp inside.

And what about wet shoes? Do you have a towel for your special fancey shoes when coming in the car from the rain? I thought not.

For me the normal dampness of rain was enough to make a smell as if I would climb into an old land rover (and mine isnt smelly at all anymore, no no, I was walking round with the bathroom sealant, been good and glued shut all holes I did. Since then she's dry.)

Just try it. If it's free, the worst thing that will happen is that you will chuck em out as soon as it's smelly. Beware and check that the footwells might find the dampness underneath the carpet not nice... (experience )

Thanks for the damp/wet smell advise, but regarding the original question:

Wondered if issues would arise due to heat from the engine when fitted in the front cab area?

Any thoughts??

House carpet - House.
Automotive carpet - Cars.

Seriously - do a proper job. There are too many people out there, who cut corners with Series Landys and end up, in most cases, spending the money they "saved" in the 1st place -plus more- to put the job right.......

I've looked what the home "carpets" are made from (thick rubber things like the ones we have in some laboratories, or matting for different things) and the "automotive matts". Guess what: They're made out of the same plastics (chemically, not what they call it) some use different ones, but most I've found in the automotive segment do NOT have a fire rating, which shocked me!

So I wouldn't be too sure if there really is a difference!

Id rather not have anything fixed down there...I have some of those pre-formed mats which are brilliant (in the desert, it saves you feet from burning on the metal and perhaps physchologically deadens the sound a bit). But, and al in my opinion of course, I would not want anything on the floor or bulkhead that can sit there and trap water under there. Because whatever you do, water is almost guaranteed to get in! I do have some carpet stuck on the doors - mainly because my knee is often rested against the door when I am driving or sleeping :)

House hold carpets are normally made from a hessin ( now banned by eu ) or action back ( which is a plastic copy of hessin ) the yarn used in house hold carpets can be made up from a few materials. Wool, wool and nylon mix, solution dyed nylon , poloypropolyne , and other made made items. Antron , zylon , stain master, all names to cover up the fact it is nylon
House hold carpet also has a longer pile built more for comfort

Auto carpet is not the same as house hold carpet . It has a different backing so it can be bent around the shape of footwells ( as house hold carpet does not bend very well ) it is also is made form poloypropolyne ( unless you have an Aston Martin in which case they are a wool Wilton and made by Victoria carpet in kiddleminster. ) it is also more water proof than a house hold carpet. Also a shorter pile and normally always comes in black or dark grey
But most of It being made from poloypropolyne which is a good stain resistant product due to the solution dyed process but you won't be able to get a fire rating on it if you wanted one. If you need a fire rating then you use Nylon for that . But still nylon can be trick to get a fire rating

So there is a large difference between the two .

This is what I have in my 110 it is marine carpet more similar to auto carpet but this 100% water proof and bleach cleanable , and anti mould. Cost a bit more but ideal for a land rover

In my last post I was only talking about rubber matts. You're right about carpets, but matts are more or less the same material.

i did exactly this useing bathroom carpet on me old series 3 to combat the damp and smell thing and it was all fine no problems at all

Hi all.

Looks like i will carpet the tub as per reads90 - going by the general feedback - the cab will stay as is or a couple of rubber mats in the footwells.
Thanks for you thoughts.

Neil

I did mine last weekend using rubber matting I got from M and M 4x4 luckily I had another landy apart so could easily draw round then cut the sections, it's worked brilliantly. Psychologically it also makes the old girl a lot quieter, but in reality...
