Just purchased a Carling rear window wiper /washer switch to replace my old round one on my 1991 defender. Cant seem to get the thing to work properly. The window wiper works fine and parks no problem but I cannot get the washer to work, I have wired it up as per the instructions.Has anyone fitted this with success and if so could they point me as to what i am doing wrong???

Hmm, i have this mod to do aswell.

I take your washers were working before you changed it? Failing that, is there a seperate fuse for the washer bottle? After that, get a multimeter and measure that your getting 12v at the end of the cable. if you are, and youve wired it as per the instructions then id say its a bad switch.

Yes the washers were working and still are when I plug it back into the old round switch. Apparently when using the Carling switch all you have to do extra is tap into the red and white wire for side light ilumination. The other thing that is strange is that when you activate the switch and the wiper works surely the red light would come on as well???

Mine worked straight away, wiring wasn't a problem. The red/white wire, I think, is for the green illumination.
The switch that MUDSTUFF sells is the one I have and is specific for Defenders. It wipes/washes, the red light comes on and the green illumination comes on with the instrument lighting. I believe the ordinary Carling wash/wipe won't work.

It's the Mudstuff one that I have and the red and white wire is for the green illumination yes. Even so it doesnt work properly and I thought perhaps there was something not right. I will call them tomorrow.

Yeah does sound a bit funky to me. Like you say, ring um.

Just remembered that the switch does not light the red led as it comes.
I took it apart and modified it to make that work. The switch however, did wire up as per the instructions and worked straight away.
How are you getting on?

I called mudstuff and they sent another one and I got it the next day, they are good. So wired it up as it says on the intructions, brown with green trace to pin 1, red with green trace to pin 2, green to pin 3 and black with green trace to pin 6. Wiper works and parks but no washer so I looked at the back of my old round switch and so that there is a jumper wire between the centre pin and where the green wire goes on the bottom pin. I made up a jumper wire from pin 5 to pin 3 and hey presto the washer now works. But now I wonder why I had to do that when others say they just wired it straight in and it worked. I also had to run and earth from pin 7 to get the illumination light to go on with the side lights, all a bit wierd really.

Your original switch never had illumination which is why you have to add the red/white wire, hence also didn't have an earth for the illumination, pin 7.

The instruction Table I got clearly says "Pin 3, Green, Link to Pin 5 "

Plus it also says Pin 7 Earth and Pin 8 Red/White sidelight feed. which means, if you ain't got it, this is where to connect it to. If you have more than 1 Carling switch you just daisy chain the last 2 so you earth and illuminate the other switches as well.
It does just wire straight in and work, you've managed it.

Yes, Mudstuff are one of the good guys.:)

I have just wired my rear wiper/wash carling switch and all works well apart from having no orange illumination on switch when switch is on. The green illumination works fine with the side lights yet not the bar. Any ideas???

The orange bar doesn't work on that switch as standard for some reason. Remember from when I did mine.

From mudstuff website:
Switch is supplied with a RWW legend on rocker. Please note the narrow 'on' orange LED does not illuminate when switch is 'on.' We have retained the narrow bar for aesthetics so that the RWW switch matches your existing carling install.

For some reason with my 7 carling switches, all of the orange bars are always on, even when switch is off. Never been able to figure out why and mudstuff weren't too sure either!
