ok so garage says diff is problem ,so its a gearbox needed so is it worth doing or do I sell it

Well, there are some good breakers on flea bay (honestly). Thats what i did on one occasion. Bearing in mind its not going to go pop just yet. Could last for months or years. You WILL know when its totally stuffed, or even getting near to it.

It's Up to you.

When they say diff, do they mean the rear diff, or the diff in the ird (fixed ratio transfer box) at the front? Or is it actually the gearbox itself?

They mean the diff in the PG1 box.

Thats why i asked about the slight metallic noise when turning left. That usually means defcon level 2 in stuffedness.

PS, check this out (see thumbnail). A fully sequential six speed PG1!!

Just the thing for your "Racin Ippo" (OMG!, i dread to think...lol) :D

hi guys not had much to say about my gearbox lots going on ,right I can get a gearbox but I lack time so I can not make my mind up what to do so I put it up for sale , if it does not sell then I shall put in my garage when it has nothing in it and take the gearbox out myself I can do it as and when as I am not stuck for transport but if it sells then I shall look for something else not sure what but it has to be big enough to tow ,,,, so watch this space let you know how it goes thanks for replies m

Ok mate, its up to you. Just be careful doing it on your own.

im ok working on these things .I have a very well equipped garage and a mate if I need help ,the gearbox not that heavy ,or should I do what I did to a vw polo this morning ha ha stuck it in the crusher filled with all the old discs and pads and old gearboxes off a ford and old batteries good money for lead not for cars though ,no I have not got that far yet I am still thinking about what to do with the bloody thing :lalala:

Cant be an easy decision owning a problem freelander and having access to a crusher!!...

Mine would have been a bleedin paper weight on many an occasion by now. All it would have took was a couple of beers!!...lol!

Take it easy mate. :)

well I found a gearbox but its miles away from me so I am going to see if there is one nearer as if its a little more money its the same as cost of petrol ,I may pick up two shafts as well ,but first I am going to put it over my pit in workshop and investigate more ,funny no vibration in reverse ,only forward gears ,I will take out lower engine mount and check that drop the suspension and check that out too but mmmm I found another freelander 15 miles from me in good nick for £900 its a s reg like my one and I am tempted as I had two up until 4 weeks ago and sold it needed room for other cars aaarrrrrrr cars anyone want a calibre 2.5 I may break it too ha ha ha ow where are my pills :D

I think I have had the same vibration - more like a shudder when powering in second gear much less in third. Done all the stuff mentioned but not cured it - worse with prop off better with it on. Worse with no passenger better with! Been doing it for 4 years!!! Had my local friendly mechanic test drive today and he says no way gearbox but could be driveshafts - except these are new and it dis it with the old LR ones as well. May be engine mounts - I have changed the lower one but neither of the upper ones - my Freelander is an 03 TD4 with 123k miles.

Interested to hear any more on this fault

hello mate by dropping my prop the vibration is more pronounced at the front not rear ,only on acceleration not with foot off gas im going to change bottom engine mount first then shafts strip suspension if that's no good change gearbox if that no good who knows mmm I have an idea sssshhhh:lalala:

Vibration under power is generally down to something winding up and moving eccentrically under torque.

The most likley candidate is a universal joint as these will shift under torque when worn.,

You've ripped out the prop so that has removed 4 already!

The rear drive shaft UJs are now not under torque, so that leaves really the front UJs and CV joints.

I'd crawl under and try and shake the driveshafts. My guess is that its soewhere in the wheel bearing/CV/inner UJ/outer IRD bearing area.

Look for split gaiters, or oil, showing seals going on account of wear.

I have tried finding any movement in shafts but all seems good. It's bizarre that it is better with a passenger in it. I am going to have a good look at the gearbox and engine upper mounts - anyone got ideas in this area.

Not trying to steal this post but just thought it might help us all.

i have been under looking at all parts of shaft without finding any great movement but that does not mean that they are not worn ,I am swayed to look at suspension ,call it a gut feeling ,you may add to post as we have the same related problem no problems as you say better with passenger ,by adding weight you alter position of shock and springs ,wishbones ,so I intend to replace piece by piece until sorted

I have put two new shafts on but not original LR ones, changed a wheel bearing and bottom ball joint and generally checked over all the suspension stuff.

Why do you think suspension might do it?

I talked to a mate who had f1 had vibration like my one , he had a week shock and spring so he put on 2ltr diesel ones as they fit ,so do the shafts cured his so to be honest I am clutching at straws but willing to try anything ,my f1 is testing me and I want to beat it

I put the prop back on and the vibration is a lot less so as I have changed pretty well everything except the top engine and top gearbox mounts I will go there next!
