ratty if it wasn't the mamouth heavy it was the 110 v8, we either trailered them or chained and hand winched them. I could strap or chain at 8. The old man would set the pull on the mamouth then i had the controls winch in winch out. School was pens and paper my life was spanners and hammers. If the hammer did not work get a bigger hammer son ;)

Ex Army bods are often extremely sought after by recovery companies cos they don't mind bad weather and know how to think outside the box. With the methods and calculations used by the military ingrained in yer bonce you'd be great for undertaking the 'incident manager' section of the IVR if ya haven't aready done so.:)

Allready in the pipeline. The IVR come to our annual re-union dinner and give presentations. Someone somewhere has released that some of us thick squaddies are not to bad at our job.....Its funny though we as recovery mechanics are in ore of civilian equipment, and civillians are in ore of military equipment. When I retire from the army I need a job I enjoy
and I enjoy recovery, nothing is ever the same (well normal hitch ups are) and I like playing wea ma big Tonka toys....this fast become a recovery thread:D

I found these pictures from a NI tour in1980. We had a couple of Scammel EKAs but on this we using an AEC wrecker and a Coles crane that just happened to drive past and get commandeered.

You can just see the arse end of the AEC in the second pic, it was over the road in a pub carpark. The landlord got a tad bothered when we dropped the spade into his new tarmac but we needed to split the unit from the trailer and lift the trailer so Trumpton could get the driver out :)

cheers ratty, I,ve been doing this for 16 years wea the military. Foden EKA, Man Svr, Seddon atkinsons and the armoured variants. Moved everything from landrovers to Chinoocks. I love the job and thought about doing it in civilian street. but I do ken its hard to get into. Winch's and cranes are ma life.

With your background getting a recovery job will be a cakewalk, whether you want one , with the hours etc is your decision . I had my own recovery business a few years back now , and you can plenty of drivers for transporters but someone who can do recovery, especially heavy , efficiently and safely is another matter !! .

i enjoy working otherwise I get bored, so the hours don't bother me. I have spent days awake on task to get the job done and then driven back. That will be my downfall, drivers hours and the working day. We still pay lip service to it in the army. As I mentioned the civilian industry is making big links with the army over this , but I understand the industry isn,t the easiest to work in.

since folk are throwing up old recovery photos here's some of mine,
