There are various canvas waterproofing and preservation products on the market, but they tend to be quite expensive.
A more natural alternative is a good coating of lanolin. A natural extract from sheeps wool which is often used in soap.
Avoid using linseed oil at all costs!

Fabsil is aerosol from camping shops mostly mate.

or comes in a can to paint on, its cheaper if you paint it on (or use one of those garden sprayers) rather than the aerosol

tomsons water seal is just as good not sure if its much cheaper mind 
but worth looking into.
we use a double strength clear silicone at work for sealing stone/brick work , it also works fantastic in my fishing tents too
