Hello,
I have just purchased a series 2a 3.5 V8, which has hoops and a knackered bikini top.
I am trying to decide whether to go hard or soft top.
If I go canvas, is Exmoor trim the best option?
Cheers,
James

In a word , NO .

Undercover Covers or http://www.allwheeltrim.co.uk/homepage.html#Homepage . In that order . You will have to be persistent when communicating with Undercover Covers as they are always very busy , and their military contracts take precedence , but they are way better than Exmoor , who have a pretty poor reputation these days . I have not had a canvas from All Wheel Trim but have yet to see any negative comments about them .

My mate bought an Exmoor & it was a riot, even mines has the canvas strip for the
middle hoop in the wrong place, I bought hoops from allwheeltrim, I have spoken to
them on the phone a few times, very pleasant very helpful highly recommended. :)

Thanks for that. Does anyone have any experience of the tubular frames from Purely Metal?
Not the hoop frames but I purchased a set of their raised seat belt brackets/anchor points a couple of years back so that I could remove the hardtop during the summer. Well made, and holes all in the right place to match existing ones on the tub, galvanising is good too, so hopefully their hoop frames would be to the same standard. Now you've got me thinking about a permanent change to canvas top

Undercover Covers are the way to go. Quality far superior to Exmoor trim. I had issues with a tilt on my lightweight that rotted after 3 years. The replacement seats I bought off them for my Defender are basically crap. Poorly made & very thin vinyl material.

Geat. Thanks for your replies, one more question - do you think it would be an issue to keep a canvas topped Landy under a breathable cover outdoors? I would be using it at weekends, so it would not be covered for long periods.

Ours sits under a cover but then it’s also under a car port. We have no problems with the canvas roofs.

Ours has been under a cover for two years, but in the open. I try only to cover it when it's dry and give it a drive once a week or so. But some mould appeared on the inside of the canvas (Exmoor) last winter.

I cleaned it off reasonably successfully, but am fully expecting it to mould again this winter. The cover keeps the canvas dry, but I guess it's the damp/condensation that does the damage.

My softop does not sit under a cover and is outside all year round. It is an undercover covers hood and it is now beginning to look like it could do with replacing. I can see some of the stitching is beginning to rot and would not be surprised it by the end of the winter I have some split seams. However do not take that a slight on the company the quality is excellent and it is 8 years old, has not been looked after or waterproofed in that time, and is still waterproof. 8 years of British weather I don't think is a bad lifespan, if it was covered it would last much longer.

Just a wee note about Exmoor. Their website gives note of delays in delivery etc, quoting a lead time of around 12 weeks. Having placed an order that included a full 109 canvas on the 8th September I then got an email confirming the 12-13 week lead time. Delivery is due today!

It is typical of the whole refurb business...things you need now....will take forever. Things that you don't need til the end...come tomorrow.
Landies!! :D

The long lead time is because they are made to order in India , so have quite a long way to go .
