hi all, hope someone could maybe point me in the right direction as i cant find any info on how to solve my problem.

ill start from the beguinning...... ive got a defender 200tdi with an LT77 gearbox. The gear box if from a scrapped 300tdi as original box broke. this box was fitted when i bought the vehical 3 months ago. When i bought the landrover the box had just been fitted 2 nights before as the orignal box broke 2 days after i agreed to by the vehical so the gentelman i got it from was building a new landrover project and fitted the box he was going to use to replace the broken box in mine.

when i bought the landrover it was stiff selection 1st, needed a good push, or it jumped out of gear, and selecting reverse was difficult. it felt as if the mechanisum that stops you selecting revers while moving forward was stuck and not allowing the gear lever to move to the left to select reverse. even stopping pumping the clutch etc didn't solve the problem.

so first of all i thought it might be the cluch, how ever the gentalman i bought the vehical off had fitted and upgraded cluch kit not long since and said it was fine when he checked it when fitting the new box. also stopping the engine and selection rever doesn't help its still wont move to the left.

after researching and talking to the gentalmen i bought the vehical off ive been told you can adjust the selector or that the secector pin for reverse (a pin and spin so i have read) may be stuck, bunged up or broken. Ive also read this is a 10mins job to repaire or can remove totally but makes it funny when selecting 1st as it will just go stright into reverse as there will be nothing to stop it.

in all the posts i have read this in there has been not instructions on how to check or fix this... no other information than its the selector pin.

can anyone help me out with a how to or a pick o show the selector pin or when can i adjust if anything to fix this.

Thank You

I had the same problem selecting reverse - no stiff 1st gear nor jumping out of any others? -
If you remove the panel between both floor pans you will see where the gearstick goes into the gearbox, to the left is an adjuster BUT before you adjust anything undo the four 13mm headed bolts surrounding the gearstickand carefully take this off - no springs just a gasket. You will find there is lots of black/grey dust as the plastic cup the gearstick sits in has probably worn so much (hence the dust) that the gearstick with not engage reverse easily as the travel has been lost due the wear in the plastic bush. The bushes are cheap and easily replaced (circlip at the base to hold in) or as a temp repair adjust the screw (to the left handside of the turret) outwards to gain more travel.
Remember to count/mark how much you adjust it as if/when you fit a new bush you will need to adjust it back to the original setting.
Hope this helps,
Paul

thanks paul im going to try the reverse light switch first as thats the quickest and easyest (also my rever light not working so could be the problem) if thats the problem ill adjust the reverse gearstcik plunger on the left and see if that fixes it.

well took the switch out and that didn't solve the problem, whipped the rever plunger out and hay presto rever gear can be selected again.

took the plunger appart as instucted in manual but mine hever had a circlip on the end as the PDF. after rebuilding it i found that it didn't depress once compressed. the ball baring on the spin i is able to push through onto the pluger and into the plunger chanel. i gather the ball is ment to stay inside the ball and spring chanel and just roll over the plunger, not actually push through into the chamber??
