Thanks all

Came down with a bug yesterday after the attempts.
Got me thinking, I'll check everything as engine that came out is a 200tdi with a 19j bell housing (original to car)
Engine going in has been in a series.

I'll try again when I recover

Hope you're feeling better soon. It's pretty easy to take the bellhousing off the gearbox if you want to be certain that it will fit, however a quick visual check should do. it's quite possible the new engine has a flywheel housing that has been altered to fit the series gearbox.

Can be a swine to get together. You say the clutch pedal goes right down I assume you have the bellhousing bolted up fully which tells me you have lined it all up and it's all in together however I'd pull it out and check it all. I brought a universal clutch alignment tool off ebay for about 15 quid and it worked a treat. I've just had the sickness bug my kids kindly passed onto me whilst we are on holiday so I don't envy you there

Ok I am a bloody idiot Turns out clutch is different as my input shaft has about 24 splines and clutch on this engine has about 12! Guess that's why it won't fit.
Bell housing looks slightly different but same shape and studs in same place so hopefully be ok and just different clutch,

Anyway to add to my typical luck of late the chain I was using with my hoist broke so I now have a large dent in the sump!!!!

So felt fed up and decided to whip the head off the old engine. Conrod 4 is very bent as when 1 is protruding 4 is about 2mm under!! 3 also bent I suspect as its about 1/4-1/2mm lower than 2.

So now gonna decide is it faster to change the conrods (I have 4 used conrods and Pistons) or change clutch and repair sump?

It's ruining my xmas :)

Lesson learned,

Check, double check and then get someone else to check.............At least you worked it out before posting pics......

Ref the sump, Personally, I would pull it to check the pick up as it could be close to it. Hopefuly someone else will know for sure.

Cheers

I'll photo bottom tomorrow
At work in a min so didn't have time to set hoist up.

This whole engine is a temp thing to be in for a year whilst I rebuild the old one. I am then planning a full chassis up rebuild.
That's what I've always wanted anyway
