Today I have fitted an in-line thermostat to my TD4 manual - in order to get the top hose off I had to remove the inlet manifold. As expected, it was full of gungy crap !! So, cleaning it out is going to be another job for another day (or two ).

What I would like to know is, is it possible to split the manifold in order to make the cleaning more thorough, and possibly slightly easier ? There do seem to be three little screws set up into the bottom of it

Not that I know of. I found out of all the things I tried, the best was a soaking in petrol then attack with bottle brushes. Worked miles better than foaming Mr Muscle, dishwasher powder etc. It's a bloody mucky job though...

Agreed!! Petrol worked a treat after trying G101 (which worked ok) I used 12" zip ties attached to strips of old towel to pull through each of the manifold inlets.

Oh and a Karcher pressure washer!!!! To be fair it was a right pig of a job!! One point to note..... Don't clean it in your bath or at least don't let ur mrs catch u!!!!!

The inlet manifolds are plastic welded together so separiting is a no no....
The best thing to do to loosen the carbon would be to soak over night in some sort of solvent based cleaning solution, nothing to harsh as you don't want to melt the plastic. parafin or white spirit would do the trick.
after its been left to soak give it a good scrubbing with a toothbrush in all the nooks and crannies then give it a wash out with a fairy liquid solution......
dry it all out thoroughly refit and hey presto!

If you can't leave it to soak (like me.... I had 3 hrs to get it done) Petrol and a Karcher is the only way forward!!!! Slapped it on top of the kitchen radiator for 30mins before refitting.

Just to add......all your hard work will be undone in a few months unless u do the EGR blank mod.

;)
