Can I drive half a disco?

Hi all.

In the quest to get the cost of having my discovery welded brought down from the first quote of £1700 I have had another quote - but if I remove the boot floor and sills first.

So my question is can i drive it about 5 miles without the boot floor, boot sides and both sills? Or will it just fall apart?

p.s The quote was £1000. £500 labour £500 parts and VAT. I have a welder and do want to learn how to use it, but just want it doing soon so i can use it and ill never get round to doing it myself. Doesnt help having no garage and dark nights.

A different place. ive used them before, they are a land rover specialist in speke. a little pricey but at least i know it will be done properly. still looking around for a better quote though.

I used mine for 2 weeks without the boot floor. Got let down so done it my self. Cant help with sills but they do support a lot of bodywork

I bought my entire disco, box section sills a cheap welder and LOADS of other parts to get it on the road again for that much money.

The boot floor had already been done, but I was ready to buy the boot floor panel and sides for about £50. The box section was about £42 from ebay I think, can quite remember, but it was loads cheaper than flimsy repair panels.

FFS - Save yourself the £900 for christmas and J.F.D.I.Y.
Where abouts are you? There must be a LZ member nearby to lend a hand for fuel/cake/dinner etc who will show you a bit of basic welding and you can just have it done, knowing that it's a solid job - It doesn't have to be pretty.

Do it yourself.if you take sills off and drive itl bend like hell.

Buy boot floor kit off ebay about 65 quid.

Box section for sills and welding wire and paint and all bits will take you to about 200 max

i don't see where the 500 in parts comes from.. maybe they are buying a new welder to do the job

If you take the sills off properly, ie inner and outers, that also removes an amount of floor space, which makes it awkward, not impossible, to drive. However, it also leaves the A and B posts and possibly more hanging there .. It's my bet that something will twist.

However .. I'd also guess that if you welded a tube of some sort between everything, and don't distort anything, and make sure it's holding everything correctly and solidly then it might be possible to drive it a short way.

Personally, I'd DIY, as has been said. In fact i did ... outside, rain, wind etc ...

Dunno, didn't look when I did mine, I just did them with what I had ..

It's also all the other bits and pieces, boot floor cross members, fittings and fixtures that get broke when dismantling ... and their 'overheads' before they add on actual overheads and labour ..

Is there not someone on here that is near to you that has a trailer you can load it on and get it there for you for the price of a bit of fuel?
If I was near, I would do it for you.

I did mine on the driveway too - got a couple of mates to help after I'd cut off all the crud.
If you do it methodically it shouldn't take you any more than a week.

I so nearly bought those when I did my sills, but decided against sealing the rust in under the new panel and giving it a helpful head start on my new metal.

I have a similar problem on my classic mini - some **** head put over sills straight on over the old rotten ones. :doh:

Actually. You guys are right. I might as well get one bit of box section and at least have a go. Only gonna cost £50 in materials if it all goes wrong. Might go right and I'll have a new skill and saved enough for the 3D TV and winch bumper I've been lusting over. Pics to follow
