High there

I’ve found this advert on the interweb and was wondering if anyone out there with more knowledge can take a look at the pics and the write up and let me know their opinion on the matter before I run off and hand over my hard earned cash. The advert goes as follows:

“I have a green '88 CSW 12 seater 110 for sale. I bought the 110 around 3 months ago with a view of making it into an overlander for driving to South Africa but due to a change of circumstances I am going sooner than first expected and so am going to get one that has been prepared before. I'll be really sad to see her go as have had some fun in her but I don't have the time to fully kit her out so needs must.

The 110 runs sweet, has 148k on the clock, 10 months tax and MOT. The interior is pretty clean and the exterior is dent free but has the usual bubbling you'd expect. It comes with a steering guard, recovery points front and back, spots front and back light, snorkel that is all done except needs connecting to radiator, galvy roofrack with ladder, CD player with Aux input.

There's a shed load of service history. When I bought it I ran it straight through it's MOT to see how it was. It all ran through sweet except the rear numberplate light changing and handbrake tightening. My mechanic also noticed a couple of spots on the outrigger which I got him to seal both sides.”

i also found this on ebay last night....... any thoughts DEFENDER 90 COUNTY /55,000 MILES DEISEL MINT/L@@k/ - eBay Land Rover Range Rover, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 11-Oct-07 18:08:03 BST)

why does the snorkel need connecting to the radiator?

that 90 on ebay looks very smart, i thought it must be a newish td5 til i saw the reg plate....cant beleive its 20 years old!

The 110 looks very tidy and if That's what your looking for and the price is reasonable then I'd buy it if it was me.

The ebay one looks a bit iffy. Why was it parked up for 6 years. 55,000 is very low I'd suspect a bit of clocking ahs been done. Don't let the long mot fool you. My 93 disco brought off ebay had 11.5 mths mot on when i brought it and It had the following rot.

Both sills O/S 60% is rotten N/S 10%,
Rear load bay floor completely rotten (had to take the rear seats out as there not safe to use) and currently has a sheet of 18mm ply for a floor.
Rear Body Crossmember completely rotten Have had to cut it away and weld in a 40mm x 80mm x 3mm boxsection, the full width of the vehicle and fabricate new chassis to body mounts.

Inner wing N/s 2" diameter hole.

It was dark and P**sing it down when I went to collect

Keep looking on ebay and autorader to compare prices. OH and it's not a defender it's a 90 2.5N/A diesel The defender didn't appear until 1990, thats an 86 model. and always visit in the dry/light and poke chassis and bulkhead take a magnet to make sure Chassi & bulkhead aren't full of filler.

Well spotted RED!! You aren’t a private detective are you? All jokes aside, thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it. Being a first time landy buyer I must admit to being a little nervous as I’m not really sure what I’m getting my self into.

No but having had my fair share of dodgy motors I'm learning what to look for when I go look at new ones. Also Ebay is a minefield with little or no comeback if you get Stung.

Best peice of advice I can offer is take someone with you who knows Landies better still take 2 people just to be on the safe side. and tell them to be hyper critical better to lose a reasonable car because you were too critical than to buy a crap one because you weren't critical enough.

too true.

another bit of advice is always buy the best you can afford, rather than a cheapo thinking "its cheap so i can afford to patch it up".

i bought a J reg disco about a year ago, almost as an impromptu purchase really as a mate of a mate was selling it. it was only £400. ended up being knackered, it really was in bad shape and would have cost at least a grand just to get it through an mot. luckily i mangaged to shift it for the same as what i paid for it. but i always remind mates etc when they are buying cheapo cars of that story.
