that looks a good deal you got, the problem for me is all the manufactures use different model numbers and i don't know what camera is best. The D7 you bought how is it different to the D5000 i've seen, the spec doesn't seem to be much different

Half the time they just change the model name and nowt else. So the gadget gatherers can say they've got the latest model camera.

I int a camera geek I just wanted summat to take better action pics. Than the pocket digital camera I've got now. Un this one certainly does that..
 
Dont get hung up on 'whats the best camera' best bet is to actually handle a few different ones and see which one you feel more comfortable with as its no good having an excellent camera but cant stand using it.

Newer cameras generally mean newer sensors which are generally better in low light. Pikeys D70 was a good buy though, the cameras in that range (D70, D80, D90) are much nicer to handle and are made much more substantially.

Generally I'd rather go for an older, higher quality camera but just remember it's more about you than the camera. Also if you are just starting out you probably won't even notice the difference so go for the one that is easier to handle. If you ever get frustrated with it or want higher specs you can always buy and sell on ebay once you know the game. :)

The D100 was the robust one of that lot. It was pretty much the same as the D70 but the D70 was lightweight plastic and the D100 was metal and much heavier and more robust. Far more 100's than 70's around these days, mine being one of them and according to Nikon they are well worth looking after and will be very sought after in a few years ;)

Not a Nikon expert here but I think the D100 came before the D200 and D300 (and now D300s) which are made better still than the 70,80,90 range.

Go too far back and they don't have much resolution but it just depends how you are going to use it and what size you want to print or view them at.

Totally agree Jack ... the D100 and D70 were two of the very first Nikon DSLR range. They are only 6.2mp but unless you want a poster it doesn't matter. They were well before the D200, D300 and D80, D90 ranges but in my opinion you wont find one as robust as the D100 unless you go right up to a D2X but then you're looking at four times the price :)

Don't forget newer cameras are generally much better at higher ISO values, its not just the resolution that has improved over the last few years!

Yep ... but I have to say that I've never needed anything close to going out of the range that the D100 gives ... a bigger ISO value is just another selling point to say ours is better than yours ... never needed but people like the statistics ;)

Eh of course some people won't need it for the type of use they are interested in, but it is invaluable to others! :D:D I have a friend who owns a 5D mark 2 and was shooting for a band the other night using F1.8 ISO 6400 and 1/30th second exposure because they decided at the last minute not to use their lighting rig :doh:

I guess you can say the graininess was down to art then :D:D
