Hello everyone !!

Been a while I know since I last posted,

Would you chaps recomend a genuine timing belt kit ( STC4096L ) or an aftermarket kit ?

Local LR garage (retails I'm now told not dealerships) have quoted me £251.90 to get it done,

should of said its for a 300tdi

good value ?

I have used aftermarket stuff, some seem to last well, others not so well. Personally for this type of job I would go with the genuine thing. Can be expensive if they fail. I'm no expert here but the kit you mention ( STC4096L) to my mind doesn't look like a genuine LR part. I looked at Paddocks. In the pic it shows a Dayco belt with some Brit parts! and is shown as OEM/ Aftermarket.
I think http://www.paddockspares.com/etc8550g-timing-belt-genuine-200tdi.html might be the real thing. Although I think I remember someone on here saying Dayco did make the belts for LR. But not a 100% about that.

AFAIK, Dayco are the OEM for the 300TDi timing belts. they are also what I fit.

IMHO, steer clear of the blue box stuff - use dayco everything - on fleabay for around £50.

if the £251 is an all in price - then that doesn't seem bad for a garage - but I don't use em cos I don''t trust em - so that is your call!

I fitted this last week -

http://www.paddockspares.com/camshaft-kit.html

STC4096LG

That is the kit with the crank sprocket in it also. In most cases (by this time) you should not need the sprocket, as the modified setup will have been fitted previously.

You will also need -

Locktite
Puller
Crank locking tool (not so much to undo the bolt, but if youre fussy about retorquing it correctly)
Dial type torque wrench

Puller can be had as part of a timing kit, off ebay, for about £23 delivered.
Locking tool is more like £65 - ive done the job without it before, but it makes it easier.
Dial torque wrench is about £14 delivered.

You can do the job without any of the above though, but, for the £23, i would prioritise the timing kit for the puller, if nothing else.

The britpart kits use dayco belts.

For 250 quid all in you would be mad to consider any other options of you dont feel sure with the job.

Timing belt, with the tools, really isn't a hard job though. He could buy the kit, all the tools, and still have enough left over to buy something nice for his wife...

Just done the timing belt/water pump on a VW Bug. Horrible job as you got to remove the engine mount and there's no space, constantly jacking the engine up/down to get to bolts you can't see

Tbh if I was charging I would've wanted close to that money but a 300tdi is considerably more straight forwards.

Apart from the satisfaction of doing the job yourself, owning the tools means that after purchase you can do the job more than once and be ££££'s in.
I have done the cambelt on my 2004 300TDi twice now and as the vehicle is a keeper I bought the tools at the beginning and I am now saving money rather than paying someone else to do it.
Of course you can fabricate or innovate but I just bought good quality tools and it sure makes the job easier.
Crankshaft locking tool & timing kit are both from Difflock.

As for the quality of the cambelt kits available I have used BP both times now and they are fine using Dayco belts as standard.
Top photo is of the old BP kit which I fitted 6-years ago, this is exactly as it was after 6-years of use immediately after removing the cover with no cleaning haven taken place.
Second photo is after the new kit has been fitted and the front cover is about to go on.
