We have just come back from our normal dog walk where we noticed a small red sign with Byway on it which cant have been up long. . The track is not that long near a mile maybe but wondered about driving down it, but ask your opinions first.
Also i fancy having ago when we get the Disco at some Green Laning as reading your Expeditions sounds like fun. Is there a group of people from this Club around Stoke-on-Trent area that do it on a regular basis?

Thanks for your help

A 'Byway' is a 'road' maintained by the local council and is open to ALL traffic....

BOAT - Byway Open to All Traffic

Just keep eye out for any TRO (Traffic Regulation Order) signs.

It seems there is no standard way-marking across the country - On my jaunts i have mostly seen the following:

Yellow way-markers - Byways
Blue way-markers - Bridle ways
Green way-markers - Footpaths

However, i did notice some RED way markerson a BOAT the other weekend which were yellow last time i drove it......so maybe RED is perhaps the latest....????

Anone in the know on this way marking colour coding..???

I would suggest locating the track on an OS map and making sure of the markings... and the standard advice of checking with local green lane groups or definitive maps if you are unsure... however... if it looks like a byway.... says its a byway and has nothing saying it has a TRO you are usually good to go!

Also ask the local ROW office about it. It might be the red marker is a Restricted byway!!

Paul, i don't think thas would be the case - The red waymarkers i noticed recently, were on a byway/boat that previously had yellow markers last time i drove it some 18 months ago. The newer red markers were pretty much identical to the (more common) yellow ones....no other signs or notices were evident, and this particular lanes goes past a couple of farm houses and through 1 farm - only saw 1 of the farmers....we just exchanged a few pleasantries and carried on.

I'm fairly certain a 'route' classified as a Byway/Boat cannot be down graded, but it can have TROs on it which may prohibit use of motorised vehicles.

I must remember to phone the local council and ask them.....

Ah well, if it was approved as a BOAT post-NERC, there is every chance that it would have been downgraded to RB. We had some lovely lanes that we were looking forward to driving out here, and they all got RB status.
