if you def gonna get a td5 get a nanocom, if you get one before hand you can check for faults before you buy

Thanks for the quick reply, I take it that the nanocom is a fault diagnostic equipment but does it run of your laptop or is it a unit on its own,how effective is it and lastly whats the rough price of one?
cheers

Most important thing to look for is signs of diesel in the sump oil.
Look for elevated oil level on dipstick and smell the sump oil. If it smells of diesel be wary.
If its there then knock £3k off the asking price or walk away.
At the very least it would need a new cylinder head, and possibly a turbo, and/or bottom end rebuild.

Have a look at the cylinder head. If it has an external fuel return pipe running from the front of the head along the top of the inlet manifold to the fuel regulator at the back of the head then it has the later strengthened head which does not suffer from the fuel leakage issues. Engine numbers beginning 15P and above should be OK.

Other than that then normal rules apply as to what to look for. Rust, oil leaks, etc.

look for ex utility they are usually well looked after. Start with an old van and do it up yourself. Have a look around for auctions they can be quite good for TD5's a lot reaching 90000 end of warrenty period for elec board/water board and army etc.

just look for the usual stuff such as cross member, chassis etc. The nanocom is a good thing to have but most TD5's are fairly reliable. Oh yea and check your hubs because some ****er has welded mine... and it ain't cheap to sort out.
