Hi

I am looking at buying a disco, I would require the vehicle for work and would also require good reliability. The machine I am looking at is a 300TDI 1996 I think, three door, the mileage on it is 110000, seems alot and the costs of parts worry me, I can have it serviced on the side so no probs with going to landrover for bits.

Any advice and experiences would be good.

I am paul and I am new to this site.

hello paul,
i had a disco 300tdis auto for 6 years, no probs at all except rust.
theres so meany around now, dont jump at the first one you see.
3 door models dont hold there price well, try and stay clear, go for a 5 door with or without 7 seats, you should find a nice low mileage car thats clean with full service history if you look round.
with the 3ootdi you will get 30mpg all the time, top speed around 100mph
no rocket but it will pull anything.
parts are dirt cheap if you keep away from main dealers, theres lots of independant service land rover workshops.
look for rust on lower/back part of rear doors, round the rear wheel arch,
lift the rear carpet and sound proof in the boot and check out the floor as those alpine rear windows leak and rot the floor.
heavy on steering box, look out for oil leaks.
seems very high mileage to me, but you dont say how much your thinking of paying ? my advice is keep looking theres lots and lots out there.
happy shoping and i hope this helps you.

Hi

Thanks for the advice, this guy is looking around four thousand for this machine, but I was thinking of 3200 as an offer, but I cant find anything down this way with less miles for a similar price. If its got 98 on the clock they are wanting up to 5000 for it, so its a tricky one. I have seen a K reg one 5 door with 98 thou on the clock for 3995. But thats about it, few and far between..

Rgds

Paul

paul,
sounds a bit tricky to me ! expand your search area, if your up to owning a disco, its worth holding out for a good one, as when there bad thay can be very bad ! had a freind with a 200tdi 110,000 miles, rusty old thing, every bit that moves fell off ! then to top it all the prop broke at 80 mph, not nice.
smashed the underside of the car to bits, floor, gearbox, transfer box, front axle, over £2500 to fix it ! on a car worth £4000 max.
so go for low milage cars, top spec, auto if posible, stick to tdi, no v8.
5 door model, try finding a tdi S, its the one with roof bars and rear anti-roll
bar, 5 star alloys.
dont rush, you might pay for it in the end.

happy hunting.

Hi

Thanks for that, I found another one yesterday here in Norfolk, its done 150000 its an ES 300 TDI auto on a M, very nice looking machine inside and out, but again dealer wants 4 for it, advertised at 4999 I think, but I think he would accept 3999 for it, but its alot of miles, but very tidy. I was thinking about that one and getting it checked out by the 4x4 people around the corner from him, I told him if I was going to buy I would want a full examination and he said no probs. But again rear floor rot in four places, comes with new cam belt. Its a total mine field out there for these things, so I might go back and get that tested, but finding a low mileage 300TDI with history is hard.

But thanks for the advice.

sorry to upset you, but i was looking at a 300 tdi xs 5 door auto in blue on a
( p-plate ) 97000 on the clock, full lr service history from new, 2 owners.
on the forecort in sawbridgworth in hartford today, just £4995. looks in good nick to, bits of rust, but other than that, nice car. !

shop around.

Thanks for your reply, you havent upset me at all. I am very happy with what I have and I love it, 3800 is pretty good for around this way.. I could have also bought a P reg one a few miles out with 87000 on the clock, but 5k is a big diff to 3800.
