I'm looking to buy a td6 and was wondering what are the main problem areas to look at ,any advice is welcome

The autoboxes in the dieselpowered L322 Range Rovers are from GM - and from what I've heard they are not known for their reliability ...

I've seen poeple mentioning fuelinjectors, fuelpumps etc.

The 3liter engine feels a bit underpowered - and IMO far too loud- sounds like an old diesel to me...

I'd prefer a V8 petrol anyday - and then get a LPG-conversion

Try Google: TD6 problems...

Just like any car, but especially an early L322, I'd make sure it had only a few owners, fsh, both sets of keys, all the manuals and was totally original.

Specifically check the front diff has had the replacement part fitted, check the cooling system over, and check every single piece of electronica, it may take a few hours but will be worth it.

all of the above plus the problems I had with the two I owned......

battery drain issues (I had three separate drains on my Vogue TD6)
airbags/compressors starting to play up on earlier one's
front diff failures on 2002 - 2004 (happened on my last one - left me stranded 50 miles from home)
injector failure - cost more than a grand to trace the fault to one dodgy injector after 3 different specialists said fuel pumps, sensors etc. all changed and no difference until I got a Bosch diesel centre to sort it

and yes the gearboxs arent supposed to be the strongest on the TD6

I ended up spending £3000 on my last one in less than 6 months, I just couldnt trust it in the end so got it fixed and sold it taking a big loss. They are fantastic when working though, just be prepared for £1000 bills everytime something breaks and it will break trust me, if you are going for an earlier one. Like everyone else says, maybe a 4.4 V8 might be better or get a decent independant warranty

i dont see the v8s being any better, they suffer the exact same elecrical issues and gearbox problems. i bought a 54 td6 a year ago and not had any trouble to date, touch wood. buy a decent one with history and look after it, theres no reason it should be trouble. make sure the gearbox oil and filter get changed and it should be sweet, i changed mine 3 times to flush it and intend to change once a year after.
