Ive found a lot of stuff via google on this but no diagnosis;
Travelled to north devon last week up some big hills and was seriously loaded up with bikes, boards, roof box, 4 people and full boot to roof. Got a burning smell inside and outside after the hilly sections. Went on straight motorway. It was a clutch/brake smell but maybe a bit burnt rubbery? Not from under bonnet but more under car mid to rear.
Anyone got any ideas? Prop donut was cool wheels cool so not binding brake it seems? Clutch was my though but it doesnt seem to slip though it does judder when cold first thing. Weird.
Cheers

Interesting, cheers. Ive done the gbox oil but not trans box. Makes sense that the front of the box could be dry going uphill ! Oh dear. Better top it up eh! Thanks mate:)

worth a try, i noticed mine when leaving a lane and hitting the road, my mates would thrash it and id try and keep up, up hill id get a burning smell but couldnt figure out why, changed the oils to be on the safe side and i don't recall the smell since.

I get this and am about to change my gearbox and transfer box oils too....I also have the wading plug on my fly wheel rounded off and haven't got round to removing it. I am wondering if there is a build up of trapped oil in the fly wheel casing that flicks up onto the clutch when giving it the beans to get up hill... just a thought.

Maybe drill a hole in the centre of the pluf to let out the crap?

I get a bit of a burning smell in the 200tdi 90 on the occasion, I'm guessing its just the heat around the exhaust as it gets pretty toasty around the passenger foot-well on a long run. Would like to know the source for sure. Hard to tell. My Gbox/Tbox oil is changed every 6K miles and engine 2-3k so can't see it being that on mine.
