So the head went a couple of months back, replacement fitted at the local LR independant, slowly but surely now burning more oil than ever!

Every tank of fuel costs 2+litres of oil!

Whats the most likely cause and how can i check?

Is piston ring replacement a DIY job?

anything on a landy is a diy job it just depends how capable you are.

Have you checked your turbo? Is it breathing heavy?

2+ litres is a lot of oil. Are you losing any from anywhere else aswell?

Hahaa my old td 19j engine did that, now it's stuffed on the side of my drive looking sorry for it's self! I had only ever done piston rings on my bike, but I'd imagine on a doosil car engine it would be much more difficult..

What engine is it?

Its a 1984 2.5D N/A, done under 120K. Can it be connected to having a replacement head?

Im a keen DIYer so if you recon it can be done, then id have a go.

I did it a few years ago to an old 2.5 n/a I had

Can all be done with the engine in place. Very easy and simple to do. Before I did that I have no knowledge of a doing that to an engine

But I would test the compression first to give you an idea before you start

They normally have problems with the head gaskets on the number 4 pot as that is always the one that runs the hottest. But always use a gen head gasket as they are different to the after market ones. I had to replace my head gasket a few time until I found this out . The gen one was cheap too than the after market ones

Mine also had crank case pressure and this was caused by piston rings pushing gases down the cylinders and into the sump, and blowing oil out of the rear main oil seal.

I replaced all the pistons and rings and got the values seated back again and general cleaned up . Cost me about £400 in parts back in 1998 when I did it . Should be cheaper now

But as said you can get a 200 tdi and throw that straight into the car with no problems , apart from a lot more speed :)

So i guess a compression test first would be useful, guess that will tell me if just one or all, so is it worth taking the lump out and doing a strip down, or bin it and go for a 200tdi?

Anyone know a good supplier of 200 tdi's?
