Bumper Driving / Fog Lights

Well, as people know, I like lights

Ever since I put on my winch bumper I lost the fog lights (even tho the standard ones are crap!) and have been looking at putting some recessed into the bumper.

Came across this link on another forum

and have ordered a set, as spoke with the seller - Metford Land Rover and they have a job lot of these, and includes all wiring etc, so reckon it was worth a punt to see if I can fit them on the front and them make a couple of metal brackets over them to act as a protector....



Will let you know how I get on, but thought someone else might fancy a punt on them before they are gone?

Well, the lights have landed – not bad next day delivery.
And I am a happy chap – everything is included as I was a bit sceptical given the price, but the lights, mounting plate, even wiring loom and switches together with a booklet for instructions on how to mount and adjust the level of beam together with a cover for the main beam when you are off roading!

The angle looks good too for the slope of the winch bumper - although is pi$$ing down at present so haven't been out to measure up, but THEY WILL fit








So will be playing with these at the weekend – thinking a coat of satin black to make them tie in with the black bumper instead of the grey colour they are and jobs a good one.

Rain stopped, so tried them on the bumper - angle looks pretty much ok, might be pointing outwards slightly as opposed to exactly straight forward, but don't think that will be an issue, as might be able to move them slightly when fitting.

Only downside is that they are actually slightly larger than the bumper, so might have to weld on a little bulge either on the bottom or top for protection, but again will improvise with the welder and some metal when I am fitting them

I have to admit that when I saw the price i thought "what's the catch"? That loom on it's own would cost twice as much from LR.

Looking forward to seeing them fitted.

Well, if they don't fit, I have spent more in a couple of hours down the pub!

Did you get them fitted?

Not yet, although they are nicely painted black....just got the last coat on yesterday.

Just need to find some time to get them fitted now...

Just been to my 'friendly' steel place, and got some new steel to make up the bumper for them to fit, plus some rods to make up some light guards.

Slowly getting there......

Nah, have drl's inserted in my headlights, so these will be used as normal lights, plus i lost my fogs when i fitted the winch bumper

Well, there is that too

They look fantastic. My facelift D2's foglights are starting to corrode inside. Wonder would these fit on the front bumper over the existing light mount and be at an appropriate angle to direct light to the correct place?

I wouldn't know, as I don't have a D2 or access to one to try, sorry - but depending on your fabrication skills, worth a £30.00 punt?

Could you measure them and give me the dimensions?
Is the mounting plinth completely flat at the back?
Do the bulb holders extend back past the mounting plinth, ie would you need clearance holes behind whatever its mounted onto?

Will do, but this is the mounting template which is on a standard size A4 if that helps in the meantime...

Started to make progress today, as had a bit of spare time.

First off was, get them black to match the bumper...



then to make a housing for the lights to sit in, as my plan is then to weld this onto the bumper to make fitting them easier....not the best of workmanship in cutting out, but as this will be hidden under the lights, it doesn't need to be the best....



Then welded on some brackets to enable the lights to be bolted on secure...





Then make another one to match for the other side...



And then a coat of rust proof paint (live in hope!) to end the days work...



Hopefully might get a bit more done tomorrow.

More progress made on Sunday, managed to get the courage to cut up my bumper and go the brackets fitted and welded...



then another coat of paint...



in went the light bracket...



and then the lights in place....






Then did the same to the other side, and jobs done, for now!





Also they don't protrude that much off the bumper too...



The lights have adjusters on them to get the beam just right which saved a lot of work tacking the brackets onto the bumper just in the right place. There are also pretty decent lights, as the driving lights seem to give out decent light compared to the 8" spots I have - certainly decent for the £30.00 I paid

Still need to make up a bottom part under the lights for a bit more protection and then also some light guards to match the bull bar, plus wire them in, but apart from that, getting there
