On my 1988 110 i have a bull bar (as in my profile pic) i was wondering if that one is legal it is chrome and hollow and has been on the car for a long time.
So is it legal on the road?
yours faithfully Burtie

The law on bull bars states that non-compliant metal bull bars banned in the UK. From Friday 25th May 2007, the UK Minister of State for Transport confirmed it is illegal to continue to manufacture, market non approved metal bull bars and sell metal bull bars that do not comply with the EU legislation (Directive 2005/66/EC) for pedestrian protection. The maximum penalty to be imposed within the UK is 12 months in prison and a substantial GBP 20,000 fine.

I did read somewhere but can't seem to find it , that any bull bar that had been fitted to a vehicle before 1990 was exempt but that may well have changed. I just tried reading it up in the EU law but I have a head cold at the moment and this is not the time to try and make head or tail out of anything that comes out of Brussels.
You can try and make sense of it yourself if you click on the link below.

dont expect much of an answer, you might get the odd one of the few remaining traffic police to know but your average plod wont have a clue !

For your info
From 25th May 2007 fitting bull-bars to vehicles such as 4x4s is now illegal.
In a move to improve pedestrian and cyclists’ safety on the road, EU law dictates the sale and manufacture of protective metal frames is to stop.
Farmers – for whom the idea was originally developed – must now find alternative means of shielding the front of their vehicles from marauding cattle and rogue tree branches.
Flexible, energy-absorbent frontal protection systems (FPS) - such as Concept Mouldings Endura - which can be proved to reduce the injury potential of vehicles involved in collisions will continue to remain legal, as will dedicated light shields weighing less than 50g (1.8oz).
Existing bull-bars currently fitted to vehicles are not covered by this ruling, which only applies to the sale and fitting of new protective metal frames. So if your vehicle was registered after that date you cant legally have a bull bar .
