bulkhead transport

have managed to source a good used bulkhead for my series 3, having measured my existing bulkhead it would appear that i should be able to get it diagonally in the back of my series 3 hardtop.

has anyone tried to transport a bulkhead in a series 3 and can tell me for definite that it will fit please.


Can't see why it shouldn't fit in theory but knowing for sure would afford additional comfort.

You could strap it to the roof with a set of ratchet straps? Just get Geoff Capes to go along with you to lift it up there

don't need geoffs assistance, i lifted a full hard top onto the roof of my chevy suburban single handed mind you that was 4 years ago

don't want to faff around carrying it on the roof though. i do prefer to potter round london in my s3 as it is lez and congestion charge exempt, easier to squeeze thru traffic park etc.

might be safest to pick it up in the chevy though, it will easily go in the back of that.

Where is it going from and to? Lz courier?

hi, thx for that it isn't far from me in terms of distance i just wanted to go in the s3 if it would fit, just didn't want to turn up and find out it didn't then have to suffer the embarrassment of going back to change cars

yer can always go topless for the day .......................or take the appropriate spanners with you to remove one side pannel while yer get the bulkhead in ( just incase it wont fit through thr back door)

actually that is a good idea thanks, hadn't thought of that, have never gone topless in the 3, done it in the 1 a lot but thats out of commission at the mo due to a failed rear wheel cylinder.

now you have said it, i am kicking myself for not thinking of it

I would have thought removing the rear door would be a better option than removing roof , keep you a bit warmer and simpler . Stand the bulkhead up and tie it in place .

the plan is to go on saturday so i will see what the weather is like, taking the door off would be quicker i guess.

Does the roof have to come off to take the bulkhead out or can i get away with just undoing the windscreen bolts?

Eh ? Bulkhead doesn't come out just the roof and sides

undoo the windscreen top bolts then yer can just about get enough play to tilt the windscreen forward to remove the bulkhead when swapping

I've transported two, we decided it was too much faff to get in my mates 90

did mange to fit an S3 one in a vw Passat estate, and a large citroen with no real problems.

so there's always other options

Well now i have it, i can see it would be a faff to get it in with the roof on, especially with high back seats in the front. I tried it when i got back.

Back door off is possible you can strap it down and leave one end sticking out, bit of a risk if someone ar$e-ends you.

Top off is best weather permitting.

And here is the item in question, for circa £200 it is pretty near mint imho especially c.f. what remains of the one that is on there at the moment.








one footwell has been patched, some surface rust but should last a few years once treated and painted up.

this is the worst piece of rot on, filled bodged and painted over by a previous owner
