I was just wondering whether it would be feasible to build your own Defender from the ground up Starting with a New Richards Chassis and using a mixture of New and Used Parts. Or would it be better to start with an old Defender and just replace the bits you want to?

I am simply toying with the idea of making my perfect off-road vehicle and just building it up over time.

Larry is right - there was a recent thread on this issue.

The bottom lines is that it will cost an absolute fortune.

You might get all the big bits for sensible prices but all the odds and sods will mount up to loads of dosh, as the others have said, cheaper to rebuild one.
If you bought a half decent one and stripped it completely you could build it back up just how you want it.

building one from scratch, using a galv chassis and bulkhead, top quality recon engine and boxes, all new bearings seals, nuts & bolts etc finished off with a professional respray, but doing all the building-up yourself, will cost £15k and take 2 years of evenings and weekends. Then you'll need to get it SVA'd and suffer a Q plate.

However, you'll have a Landy that you know inside out and will last 50 years.
I will do it one day.

But int yer better just ter buy one (a 200 from early 90's) and replace all the bits like for like bit by bit, then no q plate, lots of extra vlaue, loads better (someone on ere got one delivered for £250 earlier - if yer doing like for like then it's "maintenance!")
