I am hoping to buy a 90 300tdi and have looked at several online and they vary hugely in price, I know to a certain extent that you get what you pay for but was hoping to get your opinion on a reasonable budget for my first Landy.

Must be hard top and I would ideally like one that has been refurbed to a high standard, galv chassis etc. Possibly snorkel, winch good wheels etc.

Would you say I am best buying private or from a company with warranty?

I have a budget in mind but wanted to see if I was way off the mark.

Thanks in advance.

As much as you can afford. Like you said yourself, you get what you pay for. Have a look in the classifieds sections in mags like LRO, some decent landys in there for a decent price

With a defender I probably wouldn't bother with a warranty, you'll get more for your money private

7000 + always look for the usual rusty areas. e.g. arches, rear crossmember etc would recommend searching on ebay under land rover off road then there are some normally well prepped ones that have had plenty of time and work carried out on them

But there is often bargains to be had if they need a little work, things like a rear x member £300 for a garage to replace and I've known a customer get £500+ off a price mentioning it needs doing. Always a good idea to get someone who knows what they're looking to go with you

Thanks for the info, think I am in the right ball park anyway as I was thinking 7-9k depending on what needed doing. I have seen some really nice ones on eBay but worry they just look good and might not be mechanically sound as its easy enough to bolt on loads of pretty things and give it a respray.

Thanks again.

If you not sure take someone that is, you wouldn't think that some one has fitted a recent Galvanised chassis for nothing would you ..

I'll second that. And make sure you both read up thoroughly on what to look for. Unfortunately I didn't and ended up with a bit of a shed. It's sorted now but for my money I could have got a far better vehicle.

You live and learn
