Hi Folks it's me again ...newbie question #99

The speedo don't work (can get speed off my portable sat-nav, so not a disaster) but the bloke what sold me this bucket of nuts-n-bolts said it was a common problem and his "mechanic" lubed up the cable and it would work for a few weeks then stop again.

Never had a speedo cable problem on any motor before so is this a common problem on Defender's?

Should i just get a new speedo cable and not bother with this lube-up task, or is there likely to be a more significant issue here (missing drive input off the gearbox)?

Regards,

Dan.

what amazes me is that you believed him. you don't say if it has worked at all since you bought it, can assure you it's not a common problem and yes buy a new cable.LEE

take the screws out of ur dash so you can remove the front the pull ur speedo cable off and let it hang out of the dash were u can easily see it then go 4 a little drive and see if the inside bit of ur speedo cable spins round if it doest it could be u speedo cable is fooked or the gear that drive the cable is fooked if it does turn its ur speedo itself

Sorry if im being stupid here, but i didnt think a speedo was required for the mot? so how can it be an offence not to have one??

Thanks all....
I have no defense, it was never working from the get-go and i took it on trust that this was a minor problem.

The cable inner does not turn, so either the cable is kaput, disconnected or the drive gear is bust. Happy days.

Regards,

Dan.

I had a look at the link, but it just seems weird that although the speedo isnt required for the mot, it is illeagal to drive without one.
