so. engine makes rattle/knocking noise and won't slow down!
pull over switch off & the beast will not die!
blue smoke out the back, smoke in rocker cover.
any ideas?
AA on their way.

dont try to start it again!!!!!!
The engine is running on its own oil and will rapidly increase until it blows its own brains out.
What vehicle/engine is it?

Be careful it is not running on it's own oil fumes- it isn't a nice experience when they rev to destruction on there own

Gummed up rings won't make it over rev and refuse to stop. The turbo running on it's own engine oil will. deffo turbo oil seal gone.

Yes it can, it runs on the oil vapour getting up past the rings. It is not as dramatic as the turbo seals but still not good.

The pressurized crank case and the fact it lasted long enough to post the question point to the rings.

It can often start gradualy with the first signs being a bit over overrun when you switch off

it could be very worn bores, mine got a blockage in the oilways and wore its self out in no time

We bought a N reg Disco ES 300TDi that had this problem..it ran on it's own oil..knackered the pistons... you can't stall an automatic so it boiled itself...we took it apart skimmed the head put in new pistons and it still doesn't run as it should now looking for another block....the old pistons had a couple of chunks out of them.....

Well the motor is Tatered.
One piston top let go and all the others looking poorly.
Bores scored, head/valves knackered in the one cylinder.

Not sure if this was the cause or the symptom.(High revving)
Turbo looks OK, my guess is a ring let go first.

So... anyone got a good 300 TDi engine for sale in the midlands???
