Freelander 2 57 reg. diesel. Wife came out of work, unlocked car and it won’t start. I’ve tried now and no luck. Weirdly no dash lights apart from alarm flashing. Battery 12.26 volts headlights , windows radio all good. Checked lots of fuses no luck. Anyone know why no dashboard lights and won’t start please ?

Turning over? Clicking but not turning? Completely dead?

Not even trying to turn over, no clicking etc. Like a dead battery except it isn't as there is plenty of power to headlights etc. Also has shown no sign of problems before, always started well. We were just saying last night we are glad we bought it, seems we tempted fate !

Hairdryers faulty also the Battery may read healthy but in reality failing or failed. Try a booster battery to see if this kick starts portable hair salon.

Headlights working doesn't mean battery is good. Cars are super sensitive now to battery's, I have had a few occasions the same situation as you and it has been the battery. It might not be, I'm no Freelander expert, but I wouldn't rule out the battery.

Do you still have a warranty for the battery or was this original fitted as they only last about 5 years tops. Don't forget factory battery are standard grade that why most people upgrade to a heavier later on.

Thanks I put a meter on battery and showing 12.26 volts. I can't understand why no dash lights as they can't draw much current whereas elec Windows etc are fine. But I will try a Jump start tomorrow

If starter is clicking but headlights are bright then it would be a starter/solenoid fault. If starter is not clicking that would suggest a start circuit/relay fault. Time to get your meter out, good luck and please post the solution when you find it.

I had the exact same symptoms although mines the 1.8. I called out the AA and it was the small wire going into the starter, They get all cruded up. Simply slid it off and on a couple of times and all was well.

Same as you, had power but suddenly after being fine, just wouldnt turn over.

If the dash lights aren't coming on, then I don't suppose it a fault with the starter or its directly related components.

In saying that - I presume you mean that you get in the car, turn on the ignition and the normal self test of bulbs does not occur?

Electrical problems on the F2 can be a right nightmare.

Might it be something 'simple' though like the ignition switch if everything else works but nothing that responds to turning the key? Dunno if you have keyless, but - but if you do, then substitute ignition switch with the keyless stuff.

Yer can't start it untill it wakes up. No dash lights is the first problem ter resolve. Is the alarm led still flashing after unlocking with the remote? What happens normally when yer put the fob int dash, compared to now when it's faulty?

I think I'd be inclined to start by checking the fuses, because if the fuse ain't working, then the relays ain't working thence the dash lights and associated stuff won't be working either.
That's ratterer logic, and it might just work on your Gaylanderer/hairdrierer

Do you have a spare fob if so try that as the fob battery could be low, or even dead, it will still open the car but not start it.

Have you checked the ECU? I had a similar issue with my 90 (albeit it was trying to turn over) after 2 hours of trouble shooting (checking battery, starter, fuel pump, fuses, etc.) turned out to be the ECU had come loose!
