I'm looking at suspension for my rebuild project. I'm wondering if anyone knows if bearmach or terrafirma are owned and made in the uk? It might sound silly but I want to try and keep my landy entirely British.

Any thoughts?

TERRAFIRMA are shocking.......... I replaced mine with Terrafirma 3 years ago and I need to do it again.... I did the Steering Damper (the original 23 years old was fine) but I swapped as I purchased the set... 2 years later its an MOT advisory for play which is just coming from inside. Terrafirma are ALLMAKES who in my view are on a par with BRITPART!

I admire your thoughts though.. I would pay double for quality British parts...

bearmach, allmakes, britpart are suppliers. they buy the parts from lots of different manufacturers allover the world.

you'd be hard pushed to have everything on the landy made in the uk. i doubt most of it is atm.

Ooo thanks. I'll steer clear of terrafirma then. I want something to last the long term. I want to build this landy to see me out!

Thanks. I'm edging towards bearmach. I do rather wish I could find a truly british alternative. I guess I will have to accept that to replace certain components like the headlights etc I will have to make compromises. Was jus hoping for some british springy bits though :)

Good for you, now that is something I'd like to do too...support the home market if I can. For example isn't Adwest British? Allisport make stuff in Gloucester I think. Avon tyres...are they made in Melksham/chippenham or similar? Sam's Trim...they make seats...where are exmoor trim made....hang on is it Exmoor? I love to buy Brit shocks, any idea who would that be?

you could ask gbsprings specifically where the springs you want are made.. they might look at you a bit funny though.

You will not be able to be 100% sure in which country any parts you purchase are manufactured.
A single item like a spring you will have more chance as the packaging should state country of origin but a component which is an assembly containing a number of parts could be sold as made in the UK but many of the parts made overseas and just assembled in the UK.
I tend to purchase genuine Land Rover parts as I have had a number parts from companies you list and the life of the part has been short, to the point of so badly assembled that it could not work from new.
Having to pay for another part and refit in short succession is not what I want to do so now only genuine Land Rover parts.
Indecently the best springs in the world will be made in West Bromwhich in the West Midlands it is known as spring town and the local football team West Bromwhich Albion are nicknamed Boing Boing Baggies because of the number of spring manufacturers in the town.
Try this company http://www.jones-springs.co.uk/shop/category/land-rover-springs for multileaf springs they may also do coil springs worth an ask.

The above may be of some help to you,
I like your thoughts to keep it British support British manufacturing. :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

Get a spring manufacturer to copy your old springs.

Avon are owned by cooper tyres which is an American company although they do make them in the uk I think. I think Uk owned uk made tyres don't exist  I just feel that my 1986 LR90 was built pretty much entirely in the uk. Why would I want to make my landy less British if I can avoid it? As for British shocks... I'm in the process of trying to restore/refurbish/replace my whole suspension so if I find a British answer I'll post it ;)

Correct about cooper tyres owning avon. Plus they own a few other tyre company's keeping the brand name for name/brand loyal customers.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company is an American company that specializes in the design, manufacture, marketing and sales of replacement[1] automobile and truck tires, and subsidiaries that specialize in medium truck, motorcycle and racing tires. With headquarters in Findlay, Ohio, Cooper Tire has 60 manufacturing, sales, distribution, technical and design facilities within its worldwide family of subsidiary companies.

Cooper owns the UK-based Avon Tyres brand, which produces tires for motorcycles, road cars and for motor racing.

I'm going to give them a call :) thanks!

also where does it end? where is the metal from? china? rubber, etc

i understand what you want though :)

Well I fancy some LED headlights (I really like to have a clear view of the road!!) and some funky dials if I do a Svo convertion so I haven't gone mad in a nationalistic fever :speakenglish:. There seem to be a reasonable amount of British made parts for landys and I want to support that industry where possible. The small manufacturing industry is still stuggling in this country despite the fact we make some kick ass stuff. Where possible why not buy quality British parts? Britpart have a lot to answer for by by ruining a perfectly good abbreviation /rant
